Hey Mom, Thank You For Being You

Dear Mom,

Thank you for being there for me since day one. Well if we want to be technical, even before day one. I genuinely don't know what I would do without you or who I would be if you weren't my mother. You are the person I turn to for almost everything. You're the person I consult for everything from fashion advice to how to correctly word a business email. Whenever I am feeling sad or lonely, you are the person I turn to.

You have always been my biggest cheerleader and advocate. You believed in me when so few did and when I couldn't believe in myself. Watching you fight every day, watching you work hard to achieve your goals, watching you crush every obstacle in your way has taught me how to be a fighter. You inspire me to push through my barriers and continue my own fight. I would not be the woman I am today if it wasn't for you. In case I haven't made it abundantly clear, you are my role model, and I hope that one day I can be the type of woman you are- strong, powerful, inspiring, and kind. I am so grateful to have a mom like you, and hopefully, I can be half the mom you are one day.

You may be my mother first, but you'll forever be my friend. I am so thankful for the type of relationship we have. When I meet someone who isn't close to their mom, I have to wonder why? Talking on the phone with you is often the highlight of my day. Some of my best memories include you in them. You always know just the right thing to say; you know how to make me laugh, cheer me up when I am having a rough day, and steer me in the right direction when I am need of some assistance and guidance. I know I will always get an honest answer out of you making you the very best sounding board and editor.

As I write this, I am packing my bags, and getting ready to travel to another state. Part of my heart is breaking knowing how far away you'll be from me. For the past twenty-something years, you and I have never been far apart. I hope you know how much I will miss you, but regardless of the distance, I will carry the lessons you have taught me around with me on this new experience.

I love you forever mom.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
