My mom has always been my best friend, but as of last year, she is now my sister too. When my mom attended the University of Arizona, she went through the recruitment and became a proud member of Delta Gamma. Since I was a baby, I was decked out from head to toe with anything anchor-themed my mom could find. My mom is the definition of what being a Delta Gamma means. She is selfless, generous, caring, fun, and would do absolutely anything for her sisters. By listening to my mom's stories of her experiences in Delta Gamma, I learned what it truly means to be a part of a sorority.
My mom went through the recruitment process with the goal in mind of finding a "home away from home" and friends that would last a lifetime. My mom always told me that the best part about being in a sorority is knowing that you have countless people who will always have your back. My mom truly found her home in Delta Gamma and made the most of everything greek life had to offer. My mom is still in touch with her sorority sisters today, and they continue to help each other throughout every challenge in life. When I entered college as a freshman, I knew that I too wanted to find my "home away from home."
My mom and I have always been extremely close. Sharing a sisterhood in Delta Gamma only served to strengthen our already close bond. It is hard to put into words what it means to be in the same sorority as my mom. To me, it means everything. It means that I have the opportunity to continue the legacy my mom created during her undergraduate years. It means that I have the ability to form the same lifelong friendships that my mom did during her time in college. Most importantly, it means that I get to live in the same sorority house and experience the same traditions that my mom did during her college career.
During the recruitment process, my mom always encouraged me to choose the sorority I felt most at home in. She never pressured me to choose a particular house. The fact that I found that feeling of friendship and home in Delta Gamma meant the world to my mom. I clearly remember bid day freshman year when my mom drove down from Phoenix to celebrate my decision to join Delta Gamma. On that day, I truly experienced what it means to share a sorority sisterhood with your mom.
Becoming a member of Delta Gamma has been by far one of the best decisions I've made during my college career. From joining a sorority, I've gained lifelong friends, valuable leadership experiences, and countless fun memories. I can't thank my mom enough for showing me the value of Greek life since I was a child. If it hadn't been for my mom, I would have never known the benefits of joining a sorority. I am incredibly grateful to be able to call my mom both my best friend and sister.
