Why My Mom Is My Role Model

Being a mother is an unbelievable sacrifice a woman can make in their life. As I have gotten older I have noticed how much my mom actually does for me. Usually, a mother’s responsibility is defined by being a caregiver, where she makes sure the family is healthy and safe. My mom has gone above and beyond anything anyone could ever define as a "good mom". Whether it be the hug on a bad day or the loud voice cheering me on in the crowd, my mom has proven that she is my main supporter throughout life. Now that I am more mature I see how much she has shaped into becoming the person I am today, and who I hope to be in the future.

My mom has put everything into me and our family especially. Between the long days at work and responsibilities on her plate, she never missed a track meet or school concert. My mom involved herself in my schedule and my brother’s at every opportunity, even though she naturally led a busy life. Even after I left for college she still managed to help me with my accounting homework over the phone whenever I needed it. As I have gotten older I have seen how much I follow in my mom’s footsteps since she has shown me the importance of pushing yourself. No matter how busy your schedule may be, it is always important to pursue what improves you and those who matter to you. Life gets hard, and my mom has dealt with more than I could ever imagine, but she reminds me of the potential I have to be my best.

Mothers are supposed to show the balance between love and tough love. My mom loves me more than I could ever fully know, but she has poised this with the importance of when I have to work for something. She is my sunshine and my voice of reason. She has helped me develop my work ethic while smoothing over my rough edges, even when I was harsh towards her. My mom stood in the front yard for hours teaching me how to do cartwheels, and still laughs when I somehow can’t do them still. She has spent years helping me with homework, watching me at dance practice, and answering phone calls of me at school when I don’t know what cough medicine to get. She has taught me what love truly is and how to love others despite their flaws.

Throughout my life my mom has supported me with every choice I made and helped me get through everything thrown my way. Now looking back I see that she did this, even for irrelevant things, to show that it isn’t about making it to one specific end result; it’s important to make it through the experience. When the going gets tough, you stick it through until the end, because giving up is not an option. Whether it’s a difficult class, a sport team you don’t like, or handling bad feelings with a friend, she has taught me to give it your all until the end, no matter what. People face all forms of adversity throughout their lives, and my mom has made sure that I know my own strength in getting passed anything I face, just as she has.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
