Growing up I quite frankly would get sick of hearing older people say the phrase time after time: "Modest is hottest."
Yeah, right.
Seriously though, who are they trying to fool? I can disprove this statement in an instant by taking a look around town on a weekend night or simply scrolling through my Instagram feed.
Who is the girl that catches all the boys' attention on Friday night when she walks into the room? And who is the girl that has hundreds of likes and comments on a picture posted on Instagram? I can tell you right now it sure isn't the girl that chooses to wear the dress of longer length or the top with a higher neckline.
The truth is, our society's view of what is "hot" is anything BUT modest.
And this puts pressure on us girls who simply want to be accepted, who are just looking to be loved in this judgmental and harsh world. Why would we want to dress modestly when in order to be noticed, modesty seemingly finishes last every time?
I have news for all of the girls out there looking for an answer.
There is one person of utmost importance that will notice every single time.
Ephesians 2:10 describes each of us as "God's workmanship." We are His working progress. He sees us all the time and He loves us and is proud to call us His own - we are all beautiful in His eyes because He does not see us for our bodies but for our hearts. Furthermore, Colossians 3:24 states this:
"In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know that he will reward you."
When we girls chose to dress modestly but are discouraged from lack of attention in the world around us, God sees us and our beautiful hearts, and only a fraction of the reward that we gain from serving Him will be the handpicked soulmate He is preparing for us in His perfect timing.
And you see, when God introduces us to the Christ-like man meant for us, that man will, just as Christ does, see past the outer appearance and into our hearts. He will love us for the beauty shone from the inside out. And while right now it may be difficult to understand the purpose of modesty, when the man that God rewards us with becomes a part of our lives, it will be then that it all makes sense.
It will no longer matter that you did not receive the most likes on your Instagram picture or that none of the boys at the party seemed all that interested in you.
Society's view of you will no longer matter.
So, no, modest is not hottest, but what I am slowly starting to realize is that I am perfectly okay with that.
