Moderate Muslims Exist And They Owe Us No Explanations

Why should 1.6 billion people pay the price for the evil acts of few?

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that “moderate” Muslims don’t exist, or have no significance on the Muslim community, I wouldn’t be half as stressed about paying for college as I am. Many wonder, what does it mean to be moderate when it comes to a religion that’s often portrayed as one of violence and hatred?

The answer is not only exemplified in me, but in a large majority of the Muslim population in the world, which makes up 23% of all its people. More than a billion moderate Muslims are apparently left unheard and unseen by far-right Republican politicians, and thus, their supporters. But we are here, standing strong and speaking loudly to say that we refuse to be used as a statistic or token “Americanized” Muslims, to be lumped in with extremists that make up less than 1% of us, or to pay the price for others’ wrong judgements. Additionally, although we do condemn violent attacks, we should not be expected to speak out against terrorist acts that have nothing to do with our beliefs and actions, just as Christians don’t and shouldn’t have to speak for the KKK, and more.

“Moderate” Islam is not a special interpretation of the Quran or a separate sect; it is knowing how to differentiate between the word of God in the Quran and in hadith from fabricated and hate-driven lies that are used to gain control over others, whether it’s those of other faiths or women. Countries that use this wrongful, malicious version of Islam to rule their people (I’m looking at you Saudi Arabia, among others) are not representative of true Islam and what people actually believe in.

Although I’m not very religious and devoted myself, I can still recognize and differentiate between the actions of a few and the beliefs of the majority, which is not something many politicians can do. Their Islamophobic opinions they pass on to their supporters are dangerous because they might inspire people to take out their rightful frustration on the wrong people.

I’ll leave you with a verse from the Quran that contradicts all attacks carried out in the name of evil:

“O You who believe! Enter absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan. He is an outright enemy to you.” (Holy Quran: 2, 208).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
