Every few generations there is a Disney movie that, for whatever reason, just touches you and finds the beauty within your soul and the world you live in.
Moana is a masterpiece. There are no other words that could even begin to describe it. From animation to voice acting to writing to direction to the music, it is without flaw.
I have been lukewarm on the whole concerning Disney being all CGI animation. Moana finally gave me the confidence I needed for Disney to go in this direction. It made my jaw drop on more than one occasion. It's gorgeous. Animators finally have water nailed down.
Both Moana and Maui are two of the very best Disney characters ever created, and I don't even feel as if I am saying that too soon. I love Moana's heart and her strength along with her sense of adventure. She is an amazing character. Maui is like Gaston mixed with Genie, which are the two very best characters Disney has offered the public. So, that mixture is incredible. It also helps that the man voicing Maui is the single most charismatic man on the planet.
The music runs the gauntlet of emotional to fun to glam rock. It was exactly the kind of music I can get behind. I wasn't a huge fan of the music from Tangled or Frozen, but I am in love with the music of Moana. You're Welcome is this generation's Friend Like Me. How Far I'll Go almost had me in tears, twice. It's so beautiful and touching. I haven't loved a Disney musical since Mulan. The soundtrack is currently downloaded on my phone and it will never leave it or my head.
I loved Moana. I think it is right up there with the very best Disney has to offer. I knew I was going to enjoy it; I had zero idea that I would fall in love with it. It brought me back to being a kid again seeing something like Aladdin or Lion King for the first time? I don't think there is a higher compliment I can give past that.
