"Moana" Soundtrack Reflects Today's World

Lin-Manuel Miranda just has a way of reflecting today's world in the music he writes.

The soundtrack for "Moana" has some inspiring lines. They are relevant to the movie, holding true to the culture of the Polynesian islands while also embracing a strong warrior princess. The lyrics about strength can be applied to anyone, male or female, who are strong and want to explore the world. The soundtrack and movie, in general, are very relevant to the world today. A strong woman is featured and love and acceptance for all people is emphasized. A typically underrepresented culture is now in the limelight.

"Someday, I'll be out on the sea and I'm gonna see more."
-"More (Outtake)," Marcy Harriell

This song, which is an outtake on the second CD of the deluxe edition of the soundtrack, talks about the need and desire to go out and see more of the world. Sometimes, people get caught up in their own little everyday worlds and become complacent. Some people have a constant need to further their perspectives of the world by exploring new places and seeing more, be it a new neighborhood or a new country...

"So you're afraid? Good. It means your alive."
-"Warrior Face (Outtake)," Lin-Manuel Miranda

This song is also an outtake featured on the second CD of the deluxe soundtrack. There is a negative connotation to being afraid. Often times, fear is seen as being a trait of the weak. However, fear is nothing to be ashamed of. We are all afraid of something at some point. The real test of character is how one deals with fear. Doing something despite fear shows courage, but backing out because of fear shows cowardice.

"I guess that's just my way of being me."
-"You're Welcome (Demo)", Lin-Manuel Miranda

Everybody is different. Different people do different things. No one way of doing things is wrong. Many of the problems in our world, such as hatred and discrimination, would be solved if everybody realized and embraced the fact that we are all different in our own ways and there is nothing wrong with that. We need to learn to love, not just accept, those who may be different from us and treat everybody how we want to be treated, no exceptions.

-"Every turn I take, trail I track, every path I make, every road leads back to the place I know where I cannot go, where I long to be."
-"How Far I'll Go," Auli'i Cravalho

Having big goals and dreams is important for self-fulfillment. Achieving these goals requires dedication and time, and everything that a person does should get him or her one step closer to achieving what he/she has set out to do. Taking baby steps each day helps the goal, no matter how huge, seem doable. When people accomplish a big dream, it pushes them to do more since they know what they are capable of.

-"We know who we are."
-"We Know the Way," Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa'i

When people love and accept themselves for who they are, they are able to love and embrace others who are different. It is crucial to know how one fits into a group and know how the group interacts with the world. This self-knowledge is crucial for being able to accomplish things and make a positive impact in the world. Knowing one's group is essential for learning about groups that are different from one's own.
