"Moana" is Walt Disney Animation Studios' 56th film, and is directed by Ron Clements and Don Hall, who together directed such Disney classics as "The Little Mermaid" and Aladdin". Together, this team has created another instant classic, one with breathtaking animation and a great soundtrack.
Newcomer Auli'i Cravalho plays Moana, a young girl who is set to become chief of her village in the Hawaiian islands. She has always felt destined for adventure, and for exploring the ocean. When an intruding force threatens the safety of her island and her people, Moana leaves in search of the legendary warrior Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The two set on an adventure to save the world.
The two leads play great off each other. Moana is courageous and ready to become a hero, and Cravalho does a great job bringing Disney's newest princess to life. Maui's heroic days are in the past. He's cocky, and sure loves to sing (check out "You're Welcome"). Johnson is perfect for this role, with his charisma and overall energy. Another credit that must be given is the animation, and level of detail used to create Moana's world. The water and sand effects in particular are almost lifelike on the screen, making the whole world feel that much more real.
The real star of "Moana" is its incredible soundtrack. Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda co-wrote the music, and the songs created are fresh and memorable. "We Know The Way" and "You're welcome" are both great in their own right, and I can't get over how well suited Johnson is for singing in that role. But the real show stopper is Cravalho's "How Far I'll Go". It's the "Let It Go" of the film and I expect to be hearing it for the next year or so.
"Moana" is another great addition to Disney's animation portfolio, and I'm surprised they put out two amazing films in one year: "Zootopia" and now "Moana".
