First, I want to say that I believe the freedom of the press is one of the best things about living in America. We have the freedom to say whatever we want, whenever we want, despite what others may think. This right is both a blessing and a curse. We as citizens also have the freedom to make suggestions, which is what I am going to do today.
As a musician, I choose to put all religious and political differences aside and enjoy the artistic aspect of people's raw talent. However, I will say that the white rose movement from the night was completely necessary and absolutely beautiful. The #MeToo movement has changed many lives for the better and the timing of this type of support could not be more perfect.
Having celebrities advocate for women who have been assaulted mentally and physically is incredible. Those women need that encouragement. They need people's voices other than their own to speak out for them when they can't speak for themselves. Let me make this clear: that's not politics. That's advocacy. And that is completely necessary.
However, the slams against our president during any award shows need to stop. Now, I am in no way a fan of Donald Trump.
I have my views, but I believe that there should be a separation between politics and the arts.
Everyone despite their views should be able to sit down, watch an award show, cheer for their favorite artist, and not feel attacked for the what they believe in.
Dear Celebrities,
Use your platform of millions of followers to build people up, not tear them down. It has become obvious that our president is going to do whatever he wants despite what you say. You may receive praises and applause from your followers every time you make a political statement, but you're also tearing down the beliefs of many U.S. citizens as well.
The beautiful thing about the country we live in is that we have the freedom to have our own views. Why shouldn't supporters of our commander and chief enjoy award shows like everyone else? How would you feel if you just wanted to sit down on your couch and appreciate musical culture, but the enjoyment was constantly interrupted by jabs at your personal beliefs? Bring us together with your musical talent. That's what this country needs right now.
Sincerely,
A Fellow Musician
