5 Questions I Hated Being Asked As A Biracial Kid Growing Up

1. What are you?

- Most of the time people confuse "what are you" with "what is your ethnicity", I always want to be a smart alack and start naming off things I am such as: a woman, a cheerleader, a student, etc. I think if people are more aware to the appropriate way to ask someone what races they are combined with they will be more hesitant to blab out "what are you"

So with that being said if you are ever curious what race/races a person may be you ask: "What is your ethnicity?"

2. So, is your mom white and your dad black?

- Excuse me, when did it matter what color each parent was. What does it matter if my dad is white and my mom is black? Or any other ethnicity for that matter. This questions always seems to follow once someone figures out what races you are mixed with.

As for how to ask this question more appropriately: Just don't ask at all

3. Do you have black people hair or white people hair?

- Seriously, what does that even mean? I did not know that each race had their specific hair type and there were no other options. Newsflash, white people can have coarse hair and black people can have fine hair. It is not a color based gene people. Come on!

4. Were you confused growing up?

- No I was not confused. Should I have been? I did not know being more than one race was all of a sudden this big identity issue causing me to not know what or who I was. I was a girl who was loved by two parents and did everything the other kids did so to answer your question NO I was not confused growing up.

Last but not least and my all time favorite....

5. You should have kids with "insert race", your babies would probably be so cool.

- Why am I all of a sudden an experimental trial to be mixed with all races in the world? I will have kids with a man who loves me no matter what ethnicity he is. I do not need to make some child based on color and features that go along or are the opposite of my ethnicity.

Think before you ask questions people and try to ask questions in a non offensive way.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
