Finding up and coming artists is one of my favorite things to do. There's something so exciting about falling in love with someone's music before they become famous. That's how I found, Mitch Rossell. Mitch has it all. He can sing and he can write his own music. He started doing covers, which is when I fell in love with him. I don't remember exactly what song it was, but I watched one cover a few years ago and it was game over. I've been obsessed ever since. There's nothing more relaxing then blasting his music while I write a paper, study, run. It's always so inviting.
Looking at the lineup of songs on "Raised by the Radio", his newest album, there's not a single song I don't enjoy.
"Why I Drink" is probably my favorite song on the album. It's a more emotional song on the album, where he sings of a breakup. He's singing about drinking wine because she loved it and that's how he keeps her in his thoughts. It's a super catchy ballad.
"Not Enough," my second favorite song on the album, is about the future. Another love based song, he uses this upbeat song to song about how no matter how much you love someone it's not always enough. But when you miss someone, is it enough to come back home? He can't wait around for someone to decide he's enough.
The album single, "Raised By the Radio," is a great song about him reminiscing on what he grew up on. "I learned life is a highway so take it easy because it just don't happen twice" is the message of the song. No matter where you go, those songs you were raised on are going to be there to guide you.
"Mine was a Backroad" is about growing up in the peaceful country. In a slower song, he sings about growing up in this place but having to move away to follow his dreams. "Sometimes I wish this city was one res light and a piggly wiggly" he sings. He misses the comfort of his small hometown. "Life's a highway so I'm told, but I wish mine was a backroad."
Switching up gears a little and moving on to an older single he put out, "A Soldier's Memoir," is one song I love and have loved since I first heard it. I can play it on repeat. It's about the impacts these soldiers have when they are in war. It's about the PTSD that is often ignored. Just because a soldier is home doesn't mean they forget.
Bonus track: "Whoever Thought of Whiskey" It's a catchy party song. I know I've spent a few nights blasting this while drinking a few drinks. There's not too much to say about it, just that he really appreciates his 90 proof.
While he sings most of the songs he writes, Rossell has already hit a major milestone in his career. His role model, Garth Brooks, cut one of his songs and has been raving about him since. "Ask Me How I Know" is Rossell's big break as a songwriter in Nashville and to have someone as big as Garth to sing it is incredible. Ever since I started watching Mitch on YouTube, I knew he looked up to the big guy himself, so when I learned this news I was super proud. Playing a few opening acts for Garth Brooks World Tour, Mitch is entering the world of country music under some great guidance.
Don't forget his name because he's going to do some large and amazing things!
