On September 26th, presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton stepped onto a stage together to debate for the first time to present their plans for president and why we should vote for them. While Hillary may have said some things that could have rocked the boat of millions of people, Trump managed to make the ship sink to the bottom of the ocean, and here's why.
During the debate, Trump managed to say that his temperament his his strongest asset even though got increasingly irritated and lost control during the entire debate. He started the debate with his usual "you can't touch me" attitude, and even though it was continuous, he lost control of his words and started to spit out jabs and Hillary, like the e-mails, her involvement with ISIS, and that she isn't "fit" for office. Instead of debating the issues that were being brought up by the moderator, he kept talking and mentioning things that strayed so far away from the topic that was supposed to be talking about, which was a waste of Hillary's time, and his own.
Trump admitted that he was "going to say something extremely rough to Hillary, to her family" which wasn't the smartest move. Just because Trump didn't insult them, still doesn't excuse the fact that he thought of something to say that was "extremely rough", planned it out, remembered what he was going to say, and then suddenly decided that he wasn't going to say anything. Even if it was a lie and he wasn't actually going to say anything, it still puts the thought forward that he has the capability and has no regrets about what comes out of his mouth, which isn't something I'd think would be a popular trait in a president.
The whole night, Trump was sliding side comments in while Hillary was speaking or just deliberately interrupted her, but he didn't have anything to say after Hillary called him out on how he treats women. Clinton said: "This is a man who has calling women pigs, slobs and dogs and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said that women don't deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men," which is true, and he didn't appear to have anything to say about it. Even when Hillary mentioned the former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado and how horribly Trump treated her, he scrambled to change the subject so he didn't have to talk about his faults anymore, and to rambling about broad topics and statements that aren't facts at all.
When asked important questions or any questions at all, Trump failed to stay on topic. Though Clinton also strayed, it seems as though almost every question that was given to Trump was mentioned briefly and then he would continue off in a whole other direction. For example, when he responded to the question about cyberattacks, he mentioned that his son has a computer, and that his son was good with computers. I'm sorry, Mr. Trump, but how does that relate to the question of national security online? Also, when he was approached about his tax return scandal, he flipped the entire thing and made it about Hillary's e-mails. Again.
Trump somehow managed to discredit all of Clinton's political experience even though he doesn't have any experience himself. Hillary Clinton has been in politics for thirty-five years, in comparison to Trump's experience, which is a one item list of running for president. How is is it possible for him to know everything that Clinton has done in the vast world of politics in the United States of America and then make the conscious decision that all of it should suddenly not count? Simple answer: it is not possible.
Lastly, Trump did not shake Clinton's hand after the debate, hesitated to shake Lester Holt's hand, and did not stay to interact with his supporters. You'd think that it would be the first things that you do after you go through something like the first presidential debate. Clinton immediately went to Holt's stand to shake his hand and thank him, greeted her family, and then thanked her supporters and thanked the audience to establish and recognize connections, but I guess for Trump, that wasn't so important. Bad move.
