Going to college is foreign territory, so there are bound to be mistakes made and lessons learned.
Bringing everything I own
Okay, I was DEFINITELY guilty of this. I brought every article of clothing I owned. BIG mistake. The reality is, you'll probably wear the same four XXL men's t-shirts and sweatpants every day. Plus maybe a few going out outfits. Entire wardrobe? Beyond unnecessary.
Thinking every person I met was going to be my bff
It's really easy when you first show up to school to be like, "you! you're a friend! and you over there too!" I was overexcited when I arrived at school and tried to be friends with everyone, which isn't always a good idea. First, it's impossible to be friends with everyone (seriously who has time for that), and second, some people kinda suck. Introduce yourself to everyone, but don't go planning your wedding party from the people you meet at orientation.
Feeling like I couldn't stay in for one night
Let's face it, FOMO is real. It's easy to get into the mindset that one missed hangout is going to ruin you; everyone is going to develop a minimum of 20 inside jokes during the hangout you miss. When surrounded by a bunch of new relationships, missing one night feels like the end of the world. But it's not. Taking a night to yourself to catch up on Game of Thrones when you don't really feel like going out is okay. Odds are, not much will be missed anyway.
Spreading myself too thin
While going out every night because of a bad case of FOMO, and trying to hold friendships with the entire school, and then juggling course work and the plethora of clubs I obviously joined at the activities fair, I tired myself out really fast. It's hard to find a balance between everything, but once you find it, everything starts to work out. It is okay to try out a lot of things, but after finding the few that you like, drop the others.
