10 Things College Students From Williamsburg, VA Miss

I know, this is controversial.

Before leaving for college, I swore I'd never miss Williamsburg. I mean, NOTHING is open past 10 p.m. Actually, that's a lie, Cookout is open, but that just makes me fat. The weather 100% of the time is 100% humidity. Tourists do not know how to drive. The complaints go on and on, but I was wrong. The longer I'm at college, a small part of me begins to miss Williamsburg. Well, not Williamsburg as a whole, but definitely small parts.

Here are 10 things ALL Williamsburg kids miss when going to college:

1. The Cheese Shop

If you're from Williamsburg, I don't need to explain any further.

2. The outlets

Although working at the outlets has made me believe that all people are evil, living in Blacksburg makes me miss them. I mean I had no idea that people paid non-outlet prices for things. Being 10 minutes from the mall back home is amazing. Whenever I need something, I just go pick it up. Here, I have to order it online and pay shipping.

3. Warm weather

Now, Williamsburg isn't always warm, but its ALWAYS warmer than Blacksburg. Virginia Tech students aren't the only ones that can relate. Any mountain school is forever colder than sunny Williamsburg. One time I checked my phone, it was 35 in Blacksburg and 57 in Williamsburg.

4. Being close to the beach

Speaking of warm weather, did someone mention the beach? I mean this might truly be the best part of living in Williamsburg. You want to go to the beach? Leave early, you will make it there in an hour. Now, I want to go to the beach? I might as well just dream because I am not driving 6 hours.

5. Colonial Williamsburg

Yes, I know this one will be controversial, but I love walking around CW. Especially, in the spring when the weather is nice.

6. Sno-to-go

Another no-brainer. This place is heaven sent.

7. Having something to do

OK, so when you live in Williamsburg you think there is always nothing to do, but in hindsight there is always something to do. It is honestly nice having Busch Gardens and Water Country in your hometown. Plus, you are an hour from Va Beach and an hour from Richmond.

8. Target

In Blacksburg, Target is a 15 min drive... unacceptable.

9. Knowing Everyone

Knowing everyone can get annoying. Especially, when you only kind-of know someone and they are standing beside you in line at Target. You know you both know who each other are, but you don't know if you should say hi. However, knowing everyone can be slightly welcoming. You know that you will always have common connections.

10. Family

We all miss the reason we are in Williamsburg in the first place, OUR FAMILIES.

Disclaimer: This article in no way means I want to end up in Williamsburg after graduation. I just miss it sometimes.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
