If you don’t know the song, “Miss. Independent” by Ne-Yo and you are this badass, strong, woman I am talking about then after you read my words, go Youtube it and play it as if I was serenading it to you.
Now, to what I have to say on the matter. I was raised by my single mother. She has always been the common denominator for me through every experience. She essentially raised my brothers and me on her own. Kudos to her because if you ask me I turned out pretty exceptional (wink, wink). I am continually surrounded by strong women. My great grandmother, grandma, mom, my countless badass girlfriends. They each have shown me the power inside each of them. They have all this power, success and what I see as greatness within them and the thing is they hold it so graciously. I can truly only describe it as simply beautiful. Some may call it a woman’s touch, others may say its more like a woman’s slap, I say it’s a woman so knowing us, whatever it is, it’s awesome.
The way women are able to hold their success in a humble, graceful, confident manner is something I don’t think men will ever quite be able to master. Sorry guys. It is a gift us women were given. All these women that support themselves financially, emotionally and spiritually. They do it. They do it all. No matter the lil’ dainty housewives we once use to be, we do it all now.
Seeing as this backdrop of women’s strength has continually been there throughout my lifespan, I see this independence in myself as well. At the age of 18, after graduating high school early, I worked two jobs, bought a car, moved out. I did it, and many of us do. I folded panty after panty as a Victoria’s Secret sales associate and also eye-raped guy after guy as they checked into the gym I worked at. It’s true. I won't even try to deny it.
I always have appreciated a strong woman.
A woman that has her shit together no matter what the circumstances may be. However, when she does breakdown, she shows no remorse because she knows she is human. A woman that doesn’t need someone else to have her back because she has her own, but lets others have it because she appreciates the backup. A woman that laughs before anyone else because she doesn’t need the approval of others laughter to let herself feel happy. A woman that’s gas tank is always half full. A woman that doesn’t need a man, but chooses to have one. A woman that states how she feels straight up. A woman that isn’t afraid to send a text first. A woman that embraces her sexuality as a sexual being versus pretending that she doesn’t have those desires. A woman that says the F word and is still a f*cking lady.
A woman named Miss. Independent.
It’s you babygirl.
