The holiday season means getting a few days to take a break, go home and hang out with family and old friends. This holiday season I realized something: I miss the country.
I miss how quiet it is.
While unloading my car, all I could hear was the wind blowing through my hair. I didn't hear cars driving by, sirens, or people talking next door. I heard nothing and that felt calming.
I miss the peacefulness.
Living in the city or just being a college student in general, there is the feeling that you have to be busy. There is always something to do. I could be doing homework, working, going to a meetup, volunteering, going out to eat, shopping, running an errand, or going to a movie. Being in the country, you don't have all that easily accessible, which sometimes feels a lot more peaceful.
I miss the view.
Don't get me wrong, I love the city skylines but nothing is better than the view of the sun setting above a cornfield and nothing but country road.
I miss the openness.
Every time I turn off the highway and see nothing but cornfield, I feel free. When I drive home I take time to look at the sky and think about how open it feels compared to the city.
The country has less buildings, less people, less noise, and less distractions. While I love all the opportunities the city has given me, my heart will always love the country more.
