5 Misconceptions Of Women & Menstruation
Matthew Henry

As women, we work with what Mother Nature brings. We get asked questions regarding our periods all the time. We don't get why men are so creeped out by unused tampons or even the topic of your period. Well, here are some common misconceptions that people, women and men, have about that time of the month:

1. "You can't go swimming or hiking when you're on your period. Sharks and bears will be attracted to the blood scent."

Seriously?

According to an article by Alert Diver, there is no scientific data that proves sharks are more or less attracted to period blood. In addition, according to an article by Mother Jones, out of hundreds of bear attacks being analyzed, none of them were directly linked to women who were menstruating. Ladies, feel free to explore the depths of the sea or climb the highest peaks even when Aunt Flow is in town.

2. "So if you have a super size tampon, does that mean your lady parts are wider?"

Come on now.

A 'super' or 'ultra' tampon does not mean that you have wider or larger lady parts than anyone else. Tampons aren't like sock sizes where the bigger you are the larger of size you need. Think of it like toilet paper, the name relates to the absorbency strength.

3. "You can't get pregnant on your period."

Yes, actually you can.

It's unlikely, but it can happen. According to Dr. Michele Hakakha, depending on the length of your period and the length that the sperm lives inside of you, it is a possibility.

4. "Women don't have a sex drive when they are on their periods."

Hello, hormones.

According to an article by Women's Health, levels of progesterone are at their lowest during your cycle, which means you may have more of a drive than ever.

5. "You're being cranky, it must be your time of the month."

No. Maybe I'm just cranky, or maybe I'm hungry.

It is common for people to put the blame on your flow for your mood swings and irritability, when in reality, maybe you just need a snack, or you had a long day.

Although these are only a few misconceptions, I'm sure there are plenty of others out there. Feel free to comment or share your experience!

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
