Back in January, I wrote a poem about natural beauty. It was 12:30 a.m. and I couldn't sleep so I decided to go to my Notes app on my phone and write. I took this poem to a very personal level because there are times when I do not feel beautiful and my mirrors pushes me deep in the ground because of beauty standards. I talked about mirrors because they are there from the moment we take our first look at ourselves. We depend on them to see how we look before stepping out of the front door but it also takes over our self-confidence. Just by looking at the mirror, we can sense that negativity inside our hearts and minds that something doesn't look right whether its the outfit or body size. I wanted to share this poem to express that we are all beautiful regardless of what a piece of glass says and what others say. This poem is called "Mirror Don't Tear Me Down" and I hope you enjoy!
Remember when you didn't care about your looks
How you loved reading books
But something made you stop and think another way
It's hard to explain it, what should I say?
I admit it, I loved my old self because I didn't worry about anyone else but me
But is that right, what truly is the reality?
I question myself about the mistakes I've made and I regret them
Honestly, I do. I just wish that things didn't go the way they did
"Old self, in the mirror, tell me, why do I feel this way about myself?"
'Well, after being bullied, you decided to make a change
That changed everything in its way
You started eating better and thinking a certain way
Which is good and bad because it doesn't seem that you're happy about your body
But, it's okay because you're beautiful either way
Don't worry about What other people say
You know yourself better than anyone so why should you go against that?
Be proud of who you are-there's only one of you in this world
Kim, look straight in mirror and ask yourself "why"
'Why aren't you happy about your natural body?'
"I don't wanna be made fun of again"
'Just pray to the Lord and say "Amen"
'Kim, don't cry. You're awesome just like a cherry blossom tree
Ready to bloom into pretty pink leaves
Always cry if you need to but always smile too
Your body is nice the way it is but I understand your doubt
You want people to praise you-selfish you are
You're not the only one though
Just say these words and go to sleep
"I, Kimby, am proud of who I am. No matter what I do. Be strong because the only doubt is in your mind-making fun of you because you're crying".'
I tend to go back to this poem especially when I look through my closet and see that there are clothes that I do not like to wear because I don't like how it fits on me. Other than this poem, Alessia Cara's song, 'Scars to your beautiful', points out how we should all be happy with our bodies and not worry about trying to be someone we are not.
