Minnesota Destinations: The North Shore

This Place Should Be On Every Person's Bucket List

Minnesota Destinations: The North Shore

If anyone were to ask me where my favorite Minnesota spot to visit is, I would have only one answer: the North shore. Lake Superior, one of the five great lakes, meets the rocky edge of Minnesota, creating unbelievable scenic views and overlooks. Even after a couple of visits, I continue to be left speechless at the sheer beauty of Northern Minnesota. Here are just five reasons (out of so many) to visit the great North shore of Minnesota.

1. State parks

There are not one, not two, not three, but eight state parks along the shore. Each park has miles of walking trails along with campsites and picnic areas. The trails range from moderate to extreme, so there really is something for every visitor. Each park has something different to offer, from lighthouses to waterfalls to incredible views. Camping along the North shore is definitely an adventure worth having. There is nothing better than sitting around a campfire near the shore with good friends, enjoying each other’s company and gazing across the lake under the moonlight.

2. Flea market near Beaver Bay

While driving between state parks, a very packed and colorful flea market catches the attention of passersby. Dozens of tables outside are filled with countless items, ranging from glassware to salt and pepper shakers, plastic dump trucks to collectable dolls. The market is a hidden gem, but adds even more character to the drive along the shore. The market has been around for years and it’s definitely worth the stop—after all, you never know what treasures you may find.

3. Local restaurants

There are so many smaller, local restaurants along the north shore with fantastic food and service. A family favorite is the Rustic Inn Cafe, a local restaurant and gift store with delicious food and pies. Many similar restaurants reside along the highway. These family-friendly restaurants serve fresh homestyle food, providing warmth in the chill of Northern Minnesota. At the smaller local restaurants, visitors will receive service like nowhere else and really understand the true meaning of “Minnesota nice.”

4. Palisade Head

While the cliffs may cause weak knees for some, the views from this location are just breathtaking. All that can be seen from this height are the shoreline and the lake. Not to mention, there are great opportunities to explore and hike around the cliffs if you enjoy walking off the beaten path. This is my favorite place that I have visited; no other destination compares to the incredible beauty of Lake Superior as seen from Palisade Head.

5. The night sky

The lack of light pollution leads to the opportunity to see countless stars on any given night, and the North shore astounds visitors with the amazing Northern Lights. There are simply no words to describe the beauty in the colorful lights, and it’s something that one can only hope to see in their lifetime.

While there are so many more reasons the visit the North shore, the sheer beauty of nature there is enough to make the trip. I mean, where else in Minnesota can you get a view like this?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
