It's too often that we become so concerned with everyone else's lives that we forget that we actually have our own life to live. I've been guilty of thinking that some of the things on my social feeds were outrageous, but it's really not my place to judge others. As a matter of fact, I think that is someone else's job. Matthew 7:3 reminds us that we shouldn't judge others because we've all got our flaws.
I'd come across "Biscuits" by Kacey Musgraves about a year ago, but it wasn't until recently that I really took the lyrics to heart. There's just something about the 4.5 hour drive back to Belmont that makes you think about everything.
The first line was enough to lead me to reevaluate my reactions to what others choose to do."Taking down your neighbor won't take you any higher/ I burned my own finger pokin' someone else's fire." If the choices that someone else makes aren't harmful to themselves or directly affecting me, why should I worry about it? It's human nature to have an opinion on something, but acting on that is where we get into trouble.
When I'm scrolling through my Facebook feed, I tend to see a lot of makeup posts. No matter who posts the original picture, there is always one commenter who gives advice where it isn't requested and usually not wanted. While it may seem helpful to correct someone's smokey eye look, it probably wasn't necessary. They feel beautiful, and even if you don't think it looks great, it really isn't any of our business to say so.
There's not one perfect person in this world, ourselves included. Remember that the next time someone wears lipstick or posts a picture that you don't like. If we don't have anything nice to say, we shouldn't say anything at all. With all the time we have to criticize others, we could be working on bettering ourselves.
Personally, the next time I'm having negative thoughts about what I see on social media, I'll ask myself if what that person is doing is causing me any harm. Chances are they aren't and while I may disagree with them, it isn't going to hurt me to ignore it.
People probably look at me and think that I'm insane for the things I do sometimes too, and that's okay because pouring salt in my sugar won't make yours any sweeter. I'll keep doing me and honey, you just keep on doing you. We won't get any taller by tearing others down, so we may as well just mind our own business.
