What comes to mind when you think about Milwaukee? Is it the crime rate? Maybe the fact that we've been called "the most segregated city in America"? Well, if it's either of those then this list is for you. Here are some things that people forget about Milwaukee--the things that make it one of my favorite cities.
1. The Art
The entire city of Milwaukee is scattered with art. Whether it's sculptures like this one, murals at Black Cat Alley or the Milwaukee Art Museum itself. There's always something to be inspired by here.
2. The Events
The Kite Festival is just one of the exciting events Milwaukee hosts. Over the past couple weeks, there's also been a food truck event, a dog parade, and the famous Open Doors Milwaukee, where local business open their doors to the public.
3. The Nature
If you get tired of the city life, fear not, there are plenty of places to escape. Some of the most popular destinations are Bradford and Atwater Beach, and the Oak Creek Trail.
4. All The Different Areas & Their Vibes
Figure out what mood you're in and find an area to match. Go downtown to the Third Ward and experience Milwaukee from its historical roots. Want something a little younger and different? Check out a cool coffee shop or restaurant on Brady Street.
5. Odds and Ends
Milwaukee has some of the most unique attractions that a lot of people don't even know about. One of the most popular is in the picture above of Swing Park, a park built and attached to the bottom of a bridge. Other cool places are the Milwaukee Public Market, Oriental Theatre and Safe House.
6. The Music Culture
Like many of us, Milwaukee also has a fondness for music. The Rave is always pumping out shows from popular artists such as A$AP Mob, Khalid and more. Other popular music destinations are the Miramar Theatre and, of course, Summerfest from June-July.
7. The Food
The choices are endless when it comes to food in Milwaukee. There's everything from ramen, burgers, curry to a new rolled-ice cream shop.
8. The Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods in Milwaukee are enough to fill an afternoon. Plug the aux into your phone and drive around listening to your favorite playlists while admiring all the beautiful homes.
So, the saying goes, "don't judge a book by its cover," and Milwaukee is no exception. There's a lot of cool things going on here, so don't let fear or lack of knowledge stop you from visiting. This city has a lot of potential and it'd be a shame for people to miss out on it.
