A Millennial's Perspective On Tattoos and Piercings

It is fair to say that the opinions about societal norms, fashion trends, lifestyle choices, etc., vary generation to generation. For example, the baby boomers thrived on smoking cigarettes in a casual setting; generation x had the most iconic fashion and music statements of all time; now as millennials, we see tattoos and piercings galore on both genders everywhere we go. Beings that I, a millennial, have a fair share of piercings of my own and I do plan to get more piercings and eventually get a few tattoos in the future.

What I admire about tattoos and piercings the most is that they are a major self-esteem booster. When I was 15-years-old, I got my most extreme piercing, my belly button. To say the least, my mom was not ecstatic with my want for getting the piercing. With the persistence of asking for it and my dad finally convincing her by saying “it’s better than her asking for a tattoo,” I was able to get the piercing three days after my 15th birthday. Now here we are four years later with my 19th birthday right around the corner (it’s April 11th in case you were curious), my belly button has fully healed and to this day I am so happy with it.

I don’t know if you all would agree with me, but what I love most about my piercing is that it distracts from my other insecurities on my midriff. When I look at my belly ring or when I’m changing it, I’m not focusing on my stretch marks or love handles. Instead, I am admiring how fitting one minuscule piece of jewelry looks on my body. I feel this way about all of my current piercings; I will feel this way about my future piercings and tattoos, too.

Fun fact, you can even get piercings for medical purposes. There is one ear piercing called the daith (you can look up a diagram of ear piercings because the area of where the daith piercing is located because it is hard to explain in words); people typically get this piercing to relieve recurring migraines. So, not only is this piercing style trendy, bold, and fashionable, it also relieves excruciating pain, who knew!?

Your body is your canvas; you should have the freedom to decorate it however you desire. That’s why I fell in love with piercings and tattoos in the first place. I love that people have the free will to imprint something onto their bodies for reasons that range from just because they are appealing to the eye; they are memorials for someone or something, or they have a super personal backstory.

I have been thinking about getting a tattoo since I was 16, 17-years-old and I have put a lot of thought into what I want. That is why I have not gotten my first tattoo yet, but I do plan to get it in the near future and I know I will love this tattoo forever and always or I wouldn’t even dream about putting it onto my body. As to what I plan on getting, I guess you all will have to wait and see.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
