Believe it or not, my generation cares. I know we do because we have to. And—at least for now—that is the hope I hold on to because otherwise I’ve got nothing left.
Contrary to popular belief, there is a big struggle between what the media (and let’s face it, the rest of society) sees us as and how we see ourselves. There is a sort of sunglass between the two, although recently things are starting to become a little clearer.
For example, new models are being praised for actually not being bone-thin. Personally, I think that is amazing. Showing women and all people that it is OK to be who they are and be comfortable in their own skin--that is all that matters.
But this shield that is being put up—you know, the one says we only care if we have our cellphones and access to Twitter. It needs to come down, and the media can start it. What the news presents to us is no longer news. It's all entertainment stories about what the latest pop star did last weekend or who got botox for the millionth time.
I feel like we, as a generation, want to be involved with what our world is going through now more than ever. The media sells what they think people want to see, but we, as a generation, need to toss the belief that we're not interested in important topics. It’s a two-way street and I can’t help but feel like when I look at the "trending" lists, most of the time it is nothing of importance because it is giving praise to those who don’t really deserve it anyway.
We want to show we care, (and believe me, I’ve been on the other side where laziness gets in the way of that) and we want to show that we have the ability, mindset, and determination to finish the things we start.
We are adventurers, dreamers, and believers. We are not just looking forward to what is coming up next on Netflix or reading a blog that will magically tell us how to gain a perfect significant other. If the world gave us a chance to care—if we gave ourselves a chance—I think they would realize just how capable of a generation we really are. The ones who changed it for the better instead of sitting idly by, watching and waiting.
