As someone who is a millennial, I have got to say that we can be a bit, well...problematic.
I do not mean to say that we are the absolute worst by any means. What I DO mean to say is that we are facing some behavioral/personality issues that can be very dangerous as we enter the real world and start finding full-time jobs. Our behaviors can keep us from finding jobs that we really want to do, so we need to start considering the way we act and how we are perceived by people of older generations.
The first (and the biggest) issue with millennials is that many people believe that we are the most self-involved generation to date. According to an article from Post Grad Problems, this problem occurred because we were essentially taught to be self-involved. When we were young kids, we were told by our family that we could become anything that we wanted to be. While this is something that is still very true, it does not help that we were the generation that had the internet also feeding our amount of self-involvement. We think that we deserve to have everything right now, something that will prove to be dangerous in the workforce.
The next issue in our generation is our lack of patience and insanely short attention span. Post Grad Problems also says that because of our dependence of technology, we are bombarded by a constant stream of Facebook posts, tweets, and snaps that we can maintain our focus for very long. Normally, it can be good for us to be on our phones, especially if news is breaking on social media. However, this lack of focus is a big problem while you are on the clock. When we come up with our big projects, we can lose our focus and not do our work. However, even when work does not get done, we still expect to get some major pay. Seeing a problem here?
On top of these two issues, us millennials tend to act like know-it-alls. How can this be bad in the real world? According to AdWeek, because of us acting like we know everything, it can make it difficult for us to understand the views of other people. That is about the worst way to act in a world that is changing faster than ever. There's nothing wrong with projecting confidence (or as we call it, fake it 'til you make it), but it is not okay to act like we know everything and not open ourselves up to new details. We can all be knowledgeable about different things, but we do not know everything. We need to show what we do know, but also ask questions and let other people help us learn more.
Right now, there are a lot of personality problems that we need to work on. Sure, they are bad. However, these are things that we can correct on our own. We are living in a world where the new skills we learn can make a positive impact in the real world. However, we cannot start to make a positive impact if we do not try to reign in some of the typical personality of a millennial.
