mil·len·nial
miˈlenēəl/
noun
plural noun: millennials; plural noun: Millennials
1. a person reaching young adulthood around the year 2000; a Generation Yer.
This word is thrown around a lot within the past couple years. Most people when they hear Millennial think of 20 somethings partying it up in college well, just so it's clear the millennial generation or Generation Y runs from the years 1980-2000. Now I find this really interesting because someone born in 1980 is 36 years old this year. I find this mostly interesting because I had a 33 year old telling me all the things "millennials" are/act like/expect in life etc. SURPRISE! You're a millennial too. So after this little rant I'd like to talk about a few things we as millennials apparently "expect" or have "caused"
1. Free College: I don't necessarily believe free college is what should be done but it is not a ridiculous desire to not spend 30+ years trying to pay off thousands of dollars to pay for a diploma in something someone loves to do and put the work in to become.
2. Entitlement: I've been told time and time again, millennials just expect things to be handed to them with no work put into it. What? Like seriously what is this? In general there are people who feel everything should be handed to them but let me tell you, almost EVERYONE I know has busted their asses to get where they are. All of my friends in college spent most of their time studying in high school instead of partying and that paid off. I, myself, was very hard on myself and got an honors diploma that definitely wasn't just handed to me. So no, we don't feel like things should just be given to us
3. "When I was your age I went to school and had a full time job": Um okay? From someone who went to high school and worked like 30+ hours as a 17 year old, I can't stand hearing this. People who are saying this couldn't even fathom the book work that is given to people in college and even high school! I think it is good to have a job through school absolutely but I think we should be given the recognition that even without a job we put in some gnarly work in academics.
I'm not sure what else I can say and or write an argument for but this stigmas have got to go. How are we expected to become the next lawyers, doctors, and representatives of this country when the very people we would be protecting thinks we're a group of entitled brats?
