The millennial generation has been criticized multiple times for our ‘addiction’ to our phones, our views on relationships, and our views on topics in general. Most people group millenials into this liberal group of kids who want to see change in the world but because we don’t go about enacting change the same way older generations do, we’re misled.
The idea that the millennial generation is misled manifests in even everyday conversation. Conversations millennials have with their parents can be especially hard for anyone when talking about clothing. For example, for me, it is always through talking about clothing.
“Millennials don’t know what a slip is!”
“I don’t get the infatuation with this younger generation and not wearing a bra.”
Conversations like this show me two things: one, I do not have the same values as my mother. I don’t think it matters weather or not someone can see my bra straps or that I’m wearing a colored bra because…womyn wear bras and have for quite some time now.
Two; things are changing and the older generations see it as rebellious and childish. Yea the #freethenipple movement has called attention to many, but older generations have literally looked at it and laughed. It seems silly to them. How could millennial even muster up the courage to compare womyn’s nipples to men’s nipples? These movements seem irrational as older generations new of the “traditional woman." The '50s image of a woman comes to mind. Hair always maintained and nipples never showing.
Even with push back from older generations and that TERRIBLE video with all of the things that are ‘wrong’ with this new generation, the millennial power grows. The power and influence of this generation must continue to grow, as we are the next leaders and we have the potential to change so much. Millennial voices are powerful, and they should be used to the extent of their power. If we don’t change things, who will?
