Hailing from Toronto, Canada, emcee and producer Clairmont the Second is a young, underrated rapper with lots of undiscovered talent.
While you might immediately picture Drake sitting on the Canadian National Tower when you hear Toronto, teenager Clairmont Humphrey II represents the city with a remarkably different sound. Raised with gospel and neo-soul in a family of musical talent, 18-year-old Humphrey fuses these styles with his own R&B and rap slant.
The rapper's soulful style is different than many other artists coming from Toronto and he is well aware that his music is not something he is making for the masses. Even though he has received comparisons to Chance the Rapper, Clairmont told Canadian magazine, Complex "I just want to be my own artist" and that the two of them differ in writing and rapping styles. He considers Chance as one of his favorite artists, as well as Anderson .Paak.
The artist's previous projects include Project II and "Becoming a GentelemIIN,"both of which accurately represent Clairmont's evolution as an artist. While recording Project II, Clairmont remembers realizing the stories he could illustrate with his music. Each project since then has been "a more refined way of storytelling."
"Pretty" is a slower, more minimalistic song from Clairmont the Second's album, "Project II."
Though he's been making music since grade nine, Clairmont says his new project, "Quest for Milk and Honey" is his best yet, and he can't wait for people to hear the time and effort he put into it.
Produced by Clairmont himself, the groovy, melodic sonics matched with his cunning lyrics make up his unique and distinctive style on this project. He works with artists such as Blues and Cola of WIFETAKER to jazz up the vocals on the album. His hopes are high for this project; “Quest for Milk and Honey” took him a year and a half to complete and Clairmont is confident and optimistic about his future in music.
Clairmont manages to encompass a variety of topics in his lyrical poetry, from religious views, to women and his experience growing up in west Toronto.
Because his lyrics are so technical and enthralling, it can take listeners a couple of spins of the album before noticing the lack of profanity. He doesn't swear on the whole album and tells Toronto Now he tried to keep the lyrics clean because his parents are fans of his music. Eventually, that turned into a challenge to stay creative without using explicit language, to which he's stayed true.
While Clairmont is still making his way out of Toronto as an artist, he is hoping to "do damage" and reach more people in his age group with his new project "Quest for Milk and Honey."
