I Am A Millennial And I Am Not Sorry

I am a millennial, and I am judged.

I have always been easily irritated and annoyed by people who are quick to generalize a group of people or specifically an entire generation. I am a millennial, and I am judged. And if you are a part of Generation Y, then you know what I am talking about. But I am not sorry.

I don't know why, but there has been a lot of criticism regarding Generation Y over the past few years. We as

millennials are constantly judged and looked down on. We are stereotyped, disregarded, and called lazy. But I am not going to generalize non-millennials for all being judgmental and close-minded, because I know it does not apply to everyone. But I am going to address why I think we are a special generation that should be positively recognized.

We are known to be creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs. You can read dozens of articles about why millennials are the best generation. Anywhere from how accepting and generous we are to how we are the most educated and creative. But we are often called lazy or entitled.

Ah, the two most commonly used generalizations used to describe millennials: lazy and entitled.

Stop stereotyping us. We aren't lazy, we are just hungry for something greater. We struggle with this desire because we don't know how to feed it. That's what makes us so significant, because we were given a hunger. We want more. We want to see more. We want to feel more. We want to create something bigger and better. What is wrong with that? Millennials are story changers, among every generation before, but maybe we are the generation that takes the leap into changing the world. We are full of creators and innovators. We are dreamers and doers. Let us take our leap into being inspired and inspiring others.

It's OK if you don't understand us. Sometimes we don't understand ourselves. All we know is that we are recognizing a craving others have not. We have an attitude of "I should be running this place" or "I need something bigger and better," and that shouldn't be criticized. This attitude should be implemented and embraced. Everyone is called to something greater than themselves, maybe millennials are the only one's chasing after that calling in a different way. Sometimes we are lost, and that's OK; we are just trying to figure out what we want. All we know is that we are a ME generation and we trying to find things that truly makes us happy.

As millennials, we are the generation that grew up in the social media world. Many believe social media and technology will be the downfall of us all. Sure, we may be glued to our phones at times and practically invented the "selfie," but we aren't narcissists. We are craving to share our self-image and expression. We are the generation begging to have our voices heard on things we are passionate about and deem important. Social media is our platform. That is our free-range territory that gives us the opportunity to share our thoughts, feelings, and visions to the world at large. We should engage in the social media world, because it is at our fingertips and allows our voices to be heard by an array of people.

All in all, we are the generation hungry for something different than previous generations. We don't necessarily find material items or money to define success, but rather experiences and happiness. We want something more, we are just trying to find it or create it. We were obviously given this desire to be hungry for more for a reason, so we should embrace it and empower it. We will not let stereotypes define us and all we want is a little positive recognition. I am not sorry to be a millennial because I am embracing what the future holds for me and my generation. We are the millennials.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
