Grocery stores resemble the Running of the Bulls when there is any chance of snow in the South. By the time you read this, the bread aisles of your local grocery store have been ransacked and the milk aisle is dryer than the Sahara Desert. But do you ever wonder what Southerners do with their precious bread and milk? Surprisingly, there are more options than most people realize. Here are five recipes to ensure that your snow day staples don’t go to waste.
1. French Toast
Whether you’re stuck inside or just too cold and stubborn to leave your room, you can create your own easy-going brunch with French Toast. If you’re not familiar with the process, McCormick’s recipe is a good place to start. I also found Real Simple’s tips on improving the dish to be very helpful.
2. Bread Pudding
This Southern staple has been around for years, but you can always put a fresh spin on it by adding splashes of flavor, such as cinnamon. Let Betty Crocker lead the way in making bread pudding for your sweet puddin’ here.
3. Bread and Milk Mash
The name and recipe may seem simple, but the flavor is wonderfully sweet. Whenever the Food Network is involved (especially Nigella Lawson), my mouth starts watering almost instantly. Is that weird? Maybe. I don’t know yet. While I self-reflect, you can find Nigella’s recipe here.
4. Quiche
Quiche is a staple at our house every Christmas, but the fun doesn’t have to end after December! If you’ll a zealous zucchini fan, you’re in for a treat from All Recipes. If you’re a classic ham and cheese person like me, you can learn how to make adorable mini quiches here. For those of you who want a dish that spans across different labels, RecipeTin Eat’s cheese and bacon bread bake cake is supposed to be “a cross between a quiche, French toast and an omelette” – a great recipe for a new experience!
5. As-You-Like-It Breakfast Casserole
For the creative kings and queens of the kitchen, this casserole from Simply Recipes is for you! My favorite part is the flexibility; you can easily add or subtract ingredients based on personal tastes.
Bon appétit! Be sure to share this with friends who need help using the last of their milk and bread!
