I didn't have a typical life growing up. I traveled the world and actually lived in locations people would deem as paradise, they were somewhat considered my home. As a military child, you're able to learn to adapt to new areas easily. You have a new home, new school, and new friends every three years; nothing is ever guaranteed or permanent.
I wouldn't change my life for the world because it made into the person I am today.
1. Hawaii was considered "my home"
People are always surprised when I tell them I was raised in Hawaii, but I lived there for seven years, and those years were the best ones yet.
2. I wasn't alone
I lived on a military base my whole life, and it may seem like it was terrible but it wasn't at all. I had the closest thing to childhood friends with those people that lived on base with me. I'll never forget them.
3. Connections
You never know who you'll meet in life that you'll actually keep in your corner for years. Till this day, I still connect with several people I've met in Germany, Hawaii, and Maryland.
4. Adventures
I wasn't of age when I lived in Germany to go out and do things myself, but when I moved to Hawaii my friends and I never had a dull moment. Every day was an adventure, we made countless discoveries on Schofield. I miss those days.
5. Adaptation skills on 100%
Growing up, I never got too comfortable with anything or anyone because I knew everything was temporary. Military kids are nomads but that's what honestly comes with that life, especially if you move around a lot.
6. Being away from family
This is one thing that I do wish I could change about being a military child. My father would be deployed in Afghanistan for 9-18 months at times and would get R&R for only two weeks...It was far from easy.
