For as long as I’ve been a Nintendo fan (a long, long time), I never thought I’d hear the words “Nintendo” and “Smartphone” in the same sentence. The grandfather of gaming has always been exclusive to their systems, wanting to pour all of their heart and soul into their mainstay titles rather than delve into the world of microtransactions.
So when their first smartphone app was announced earlier this year, it came as a surprise to everyone. The general consensus was that it would flop. In fact, people had such little faith in it that it even drove down Nintendo’s stock valuation at first. Even more surprising is the fact that the app hit 3 million players in just two days, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
So what exactly is Miitomo? It is a social networking app that is… that is ….
Well, to be quite honest, I’m not exactly sure what it is at all.
Is it a social networking app, or is it a game? More importantly, is it worth checking out? Nintendo seems to love confusing their user-base (yes, I am referring to the Wii U), and Miitomo appears to be no exception.
Advertised by Nintendo as a “smart-device app that sparks one-of-a-kind conversations between you and your friends," Miitomo fuels all kinds of wacky interactions. Being a die-hard Nintendo fan, I downloaded the app as soon as it was made available, and I am happy to report that so far it has not disappointed. Unique and full of witty charm, Miitomo may also be one of the downright strangest apps I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
Miitomo works by asking your character a series of questions that you may answer however you please. Once your friends interact with your Mii, they can see your answers and respond to them, creating a unique interface for conversations to start. You are completely in control of your personal Mii -- from how they dress to the type of personality they have and how animated they are in interactions with others. The game is surprisingly smart: it utilizes a full text-to-speech feature, and characters will even react with fitting expressions based on keywords you type. In addition, you can quite literally dress your character however you want, allowing you to bring your dream closet to life or even put your Mii in a hot-dog costume (hey, I’m not one to judge).
However, zany interactions and outfits aren’t all Miitomo boasts. Perhaps the most fascinating feature is its photo creation tool, called Miifoto, that lets you create funny images using your miis as well as any photos you may have saved to your device. There’s no limit to the kinds of images you can create, and the result is both hilarious and, well, occasionally disastrous.
My personal foray into Miifoto. I'm not sure this is how this app was meant to be used...
There are precious few apps that allow you to pit the mii versions of Trump and Obama in an all-out brawl against each other and also allow you to communicate with your friends in such an over the top, bizarre way. But will it stand the test of time? It’s hard to say whether the peculiar app will sustain popularity or burn out once the novelty wears off. But because Miitomo was launched alongside Nintendo’s new reward program, My Nintendo, it’s likely that new features and support for the game will continue for a long time to come. In fact, Miitomo is only one of five smartphone apps Nintendo plans to release in the future.
If you like Nintendo, cute apps with a smooth interface, and seeing your friend’s answers to sometimes mundane and sometimes oddly specific questions, you’ll love Miitomo.
