You Might Be A Mom If....

Going beyond the traditional sense of the word.

Being a mother, as I have heard through the grapevine, is awesome. Whether young or old, we can all attest to the awesomeness that generally comes along with such a title. Traditionally, a mother is someone who gets to nurture her children and hopefully raise them to be successful humans. In modern society, the title “mom” has now become a new type of label!

Not only does the term "mom" refer to someone who is a mother by having a child, but also any other women who possess any of the motherly traits in other groups. A few of these groups can be soccer teams, dance companies, bands and even the more non-traditional groups like friend groups. With this new spin on the term, a mom can be of any age and can be among groups of individuals that are considered peers. Although no matter where a girl is found "momming," taking place as "resident" mom resembles the glue that helps hold a group together, or at least hopefully pushes the group to be the best version of them. Here are five indications you might be a mom.

1. Encourages others to clean up their mess.

You don't have to be a type A mom to become a neat freak when it comes to messes. Maybe it comes down to being one of the only things that you can control in a "momming" situation, or maybe it is just because you are going a bit crazy and the mess is just convenient to let it all out on. In the end, if you can keep control around mess when no one else seems to care then you might be the mom of the situation!

2. Appropriate language please.

From censoring what is watched to limiting the amount of secular rap a kid can listen to, a lot of moms can be found to have a strong opinion on what kind of language corrupts their child's thoughts. It isn't that all of the time they are worried that you would now know the "bad" words, or that they expect that you would never be exposed to that type of thing. The reasoning goes beyond that. This mom trait is present because they know you are more educated, more capable and better than dropping the f-bomb every other sentence. If you find yourself ever reminding others not to cuss, then you might be a mom!

3. Remember to eat your vegetables.

We have all heard the infamous phrase, "You can't have dessert until you eat your vegetables!" Vegetables are an import part of a balanced diet, and while not all moms like them that much either, no mom can deny that vegetables are a necessity in being healthy all around. And no, french fries, onion rings and dressing soaked salads don't count as a serving. Besides, any mom would tell you that you need more than one serving of vegetables a day anyway! If you ever find yourself trying to sell the awesomeness of vegetables to others, you might be a mom!

4. Sleep is important.

As a kid, it was always thought to be an act of sneakiness when the light would go out but we would still be awake after mom had left the room. The staying up late most of the time caught up to you, and life was not so fun. Even in college moms and mom figures love to give the reminder of how a brain functions better with a good night's sleep. If you find yourself reminding others that they should get at least eight hours of sleep, then you might be a mom!

5. I love you.

This message is not always delivered by mouth, but often through actions. In the nature of being a mom, love is just part of the equation. It is really hard when the love that you share is not received in the way that it was intended. A lot of mothers that I know give some of the most unconditional love out there; it is inspiring, to say the least. If you find yourself loving in the hardest situations where it would be easier to choose another route, then you might be a mom!

From the mom who adopted children from another country, the mom who treats the kids on the soccer team like they are her own and the girl who tried to keep her friend in line, they all have one central commonality: having a heart that is bigger than life! This single trait is more important than if there is a blood relation or not. After all, there are women who mother ducks, dogs and other delightful creatures.

The story could have never started without a mom in the biological sense, but the legitimate meaning of this reality is so much more. If you find yourself acting like a mom, embrace it. Everyone needs a mom figure in their life, even if it comes from the most unexpected places. You never truly know when a "momming" moment is needed in another person's life. If you ever feel your inner mom calling out, embrace that awesomeness, because at that moment it might be your turn to be a mom!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
