8 Simple Ways To Make A 'Stay-cation' Better Over Spring Break

Although it is called 'spring break', the midwest has no clue what spring is until at least the last week of May. So if you are staying home in the cold for spring break, here are some ways to make it feel like you did not miss out on the fun and the sun.

1. Have a spa day

If you are missing out on the relaxation of a spring break getaway, then maybe it is time to schedule a session at your local spa. Whether you get a manicure, pedicure, facial, or regular massage, any kind of treatment will definitely help to reduce stress. Having a spa day will not transport you to an island but it will make you feel as relaxed as possible.

2. Go to a casino

A lot of tropical destinations and resorts have a casino for the guests to gamble. If you live near a casino and are of legal age, I recommend picking a night to visit the casino. Playing blackjack, slots, and roulette may help you to feel as carefree as if you were on a vacation. Going to a casino gives you something to do and is also a fun way to get out of the house for a night.

3. Eat at different restaurants

Going on vacation means eating at different places than usual, but no one said you can not explore your taste palate while at home. Try going to different places for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Skipping out on the regular Taco Bell and Starbucks runs and trying new types of food and local restaurants will help diversify your palate and will help you potentially find new places you love to eat at.

4. Go to an indoor waterpark

Usually leaving for spring break means going somewhere with a beach. Instead of going to a beach, try going to an indoor pool or even better, an indoor waterpark. This way, you are able to swim in a fun environment while still being close to home. Going to an indoor pool or waterpark will spice things up over break and is definitely a good way to relax and have fun.

5. Go shopping

Many people go on vacation and either buy a whole new wardrobe before they go or have a million souvenirs when they get back from their destination. Although you do not have to do this, maybe try setting aside some time to go to a farmers market, shopping mall, or even do some online shopping and buy something you really like or enjoy to make you feel better. Shopping can be very therapeutic for some people and can definitely make you feel better about not going anywhere for the break.

6. Bar crawl or wine night

A lot of people will go to a tropical resort or on vacation just to chill on a beach while drinking margaritas and mimosas. if you are the type of person who wants to relax by drinking with some buds and making great memories, try gathering a few friends and inviting them to a wine night or doing a bar crawl. A bar crawl consists of finding different bars in a specific area that is pretty interesting and bar-hopping from place to place. If you would rather have a low-key kind of a night, try inviting pals over to drink wine (or something else), watch movies, eat food, and hang out. Doing this will for sure make you feel just as good as the people who went away for the break.

7. Plan outings similar to cruise activities

Cruises offer many different kinds of events for people to pass the time while they are on the ship. A lot of the activities they have on-board cam easily be found on land too. For example, try going bowling, putt-putting, karaoke, clubbing, rock-climbing, paint-balling, concerts/shows, go-karting, laser-tag, or even go to a library/coffee shop to relax. All of these activities are easy to find in cities and will keep someone occupied for a long time and are guaranteed to make anyone smile.

8. Go to a gym

Even though most people tend to not work out while on vacation, exercising releases endorphins which will make you happier. Additionally, exercising makes people more relaxed. On top of that, a lot of nice gyms will offer equipment which resorts or cruises will also offer. For example, if you do not want to necessarily exercise some gyms offer therapeutic benefits such as saunas, hot tubs, and steam rooms, which are sure to make anyone relax.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
