Midterm Week Has College Students Taking Risks

College students are the most stressed people to exist on this planet due to deadlines, projects, exams, etc. Midterm week is one of the top moments during the school year where every students seems to lose their mind a little and pull a last minute thing. For instance, a 20 year old college student named Vanessa who attends the University of Hawaii, Maui had her boyfriend, Mark, sacrifice his sneakers for her sandals in order to be able to take a midterm!

It all started when Vanessa and Mark were hanging out before Vanessa's chemistry lab and realized that she forgot to wear close-toeshoes for lab since it is one of the requirements. To help Vanessa not stress out much more, he lended her his Vans, which left him with her sandals. According to BuzzFeed News Vanessa state, "When I realized that I wasn’t wearing the proper attire (my professor is really strict on dress code), instead of driving all the way back home to get shoes, Mark insisted that I take his,”. If only the world was filled with more guys like Mark!

Most guys would tell their girlfriends to speak to her professor, not attend her exam and take it another day, or tell her to be a rebel and go into examination with her sandals. This just comes to shows the desperate things college students do when it comes to last minute timing. When grades are everything, there is no limit to doing anything to get a high grade but in this case to take an exam!

On the other hand, according to Vanessa she mentioned to BuzzFeed that Mark has always been the sweetest boyfriend to her! He carries her backpack, laptop, and sometimes even walks with her to print before class. Without Mark by her side she would have still found a way to be able to take her lab exam, but for individuals who don't have a significant other to help them for the slightest amount have a higher stress level.

For instance, during an 9 AM midterm, I decided to wake up early to study because I had already been exhausted from completing other work and studying for other exams. Waking up early on the day of an exam is not the best choice! Here is why, I ended up oversleeping and only had two hours to review my notes. I took the risk of sleeping when I should have just pulled an all-nighter and could have slept after my exam.

Someone else I know in one of my classes decided to design a last minute skirt for a Draping final and lets just say that her final piece did not look like a skirt nor did it fit the mannequin size she was designing for. She took the risk of pulling not only a last minute but an all nighter, which is the worst combination during midterm week! College is stressful and drives us students crazy! But the only way to get better at College and tricky situations is by thinking ahead of time.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
