Your Midterm Survival Guide

Breathe, you've got this!

UNCYC

You’re relaxing in your dorm room watching the next episode of Shameless, and then you get a text from your friend:

“Library study date tonight? Need to prep for midterms next week!”

Suddenly your heart rate increases, your eyes go wide, and your mind is racing. What do you mean midterms are here? Didn’t we just start learning material?! I’m not prepared at all!

OK. Inhale. Exhale. You’ve got this.

1. Utilize your calendar

Whether it be a physical agenda, reminders on a whiteboard, or the calendar in your phone/computer – USE IT. Writing down due dates and things needed to be accomplished that night can help you remember it, and physically checking it off gives you motivation!

2. Stay hydrated

As much as we want to, we can’t live off of Red Bull, espresso and other forms of caffeine. Keep yourself hydrated with water in between each serving of a caffeinated drink. Your body and mind will thank you.

3. Music

Spotify’s “chill vibes” playlist is my go-to for studying. Rhythmic sounds help keep me in focus without making me fall asleep like classical tunes. However, if Waka Flocka and 21 Savage help you study, then you do you.

4. Break your day down into sections

Whether you designate your days and hours by subject or assignment, set specific times for certain subjects or projects so you can focus on one thing at once. Multitasking isn’t going to work here.

5. Remember to eat

No wonder you feel more tired than usual when you don’t eat. Calories = energy. Energy = getting that history paper done. Set reminders if you need to grab dinner or small snacks throughout the day.

6. Power in numbers

Working in groups help keep you motivated when you see your friends around you working diligently on study guides and reviewing material. You can keep each other in check and use each other as comic relief when you need a time-out from the books.

7. “Me-time” is key

If you know your mind is fried and your body is aching, then quit. You know your body better than anyone else, so take the time to breathe when you need it. It’s not selfish, it’s self-care. I don’t believe in the saying, “You can sleep when you're dead” – no, I’m going to take a nap because if I don’t, then I can’t focus on my work and will be very evil to my friends (who are also stressing out as much as I am). Taking a long hot shower, watching a few Netflix episodes, and giving yourself hand and arm massages all play a fantastic role in de-stressing.

8. Catch some Z’s

As tempting as pulling an all-nighter can be, it’s not worth it. Yes, you can get a lot of work done, but is the overdose of caffeine and half-assed work worth it? Sleep renews the body and stores the information you gathered and studied for over the day.

9. Breathe

If you’ve studied and payed attention to your classes (and to your body), then you should be in the clear. You’ve got this!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
