*Spoilers for the movie ahead if you haven't seen it.*
I've been recommended this movie by many of my friends and even watched the beginning of a YouTube commentary about it, but the movie never caught my interest. I hate horror movies that aren't from a book I've read, like "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" and "IT," so I never wanted to watch "Midsommar."
However, for some reason, I finally watched Midsommar this week, and I am so confused. Confusedly distraught? I don't know how to explain it. It's an amazing movie, but it is extremely grotesque. From the beginning, you see Dani's family dead in the burning building filled with three living people and the murdered friends at the end.
The whole movie puts you in an uncomfortable position from the get-go, and you can tell something is wrong with Dani's family. The relationship with the boyfriend is clearly a toxic relationship for the both of them, too. To me, the scariest part of the movie was the way Pelle - the character who brought everyone to Sweden - has no real answers to his friends' questions about the whole festival.
What makes this movie so interesting, though? I think the buildup of all of the crappy-ass friends' deaths, the strange cult that isn't even truly explained at the end of the movie, and the strange beauty of the cinematography is what makes this movie.
