Middle School Was The Worst

I feel like everyone had a time during school that they dreaded; mine was middle school.

Middle School was torture for me. I remember I used to fake being sick so much because I literally could not stand it. I could probably write a whole book of all my unfortunate events. Here are a few stories that have traumatized me to this day.

My middle school consisted of 6th grade through 8th grade. So I had to deal with the same people for three whole years. Boy, let me tell you it SUCKED.

This school had ridiculous rules. One rule was we couldn't step foot on the grass. Meanwhile, we are all cramped on the tiny concrete sidewalks trying to race to our next class without trying to touch the grass. This school consisted of about 6 hallways that were individual buildings. My locker was located in the dead center in one of these buildings.

If that weren't enough, they came up with a ridiculous rule that if your locker is past the center of the hall, you have to walk all the way around to the back of the building to get to your locker. Technically my locker was in the middle, but there was this teacher told me personally that I had to walk around.

One morning I walk all the way around the building and to my locker. Apparently, this teacher did not see me come in from the back. He started yelling at me. "Hey! You did not go around! You need to go back outside and come in from the back!" Meanwhile, I'm standing there SOBBING because I did come in from the back. He did not believe me.

Many students passed by and they all gave me sad looks because they knew that the teacher was so mean to everyone. Eventually, he said, "I'll let you go this time, don't let me catch you again." Thank goodness I never had a class with him.

I also had another rude teacher in my drama class. In that class, we had to design a prop for the school play and my group decided we were going to make a tree. The teacher gave us no advice or any ideas on how to begin. She was only responsible for purchasing the things we would need to create the tree.

It took us an extremely long time but everything we made eventually turned into a trial and error. A friend from another class told me that the teacher ended up throwing our tree in the trash! I couldn't believe that she threw away our hard work. The same teacher ran right into me and almost knocked me down. She had the nerve to yell at me, "Watch where you're going!"

In 7th grade, I had a very strange occurrence with my male history teacher. I had missed a test and he came up to me during class and asked me to stay after so he could discuss when I would take the test. So, I did as he asked and he LOCKED the door. My heart sunk. He sat back down at his desk. I started to panic. He ended up just telling me when I was going to retake the test. But was it really necessary to lock his door? In fact, I firmly believe it was inappropriate and scary.

Overall, middle school was so terrible for me. It was a nightmare that I had to live through for 3 years. I'm just glad that it's all over now.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
