SPOILERS AHEAD! Last night was the mid-season premiere of NBC's newest hit This Is Us. And if you are anything like me, you were in need of some answers. So here I am (once again) giving you a recap of the best scenes from last nights episode!
1. TOBY IS ALIVE!
I knew they wouldn't have the heart to kill him off just yet, BUT, we were still left on edge after his heart attack cliffhanger. Even though he lived through it, his arrhythmia condition made for a heartbreaking scene after he gets scared when they tell him about the hole in his heart. I'm beyond happy he went through with his surgery, though, and the scene where Kate tells him that she loves him for the first time... ugh. Just beautiful.
2. William and Jesse's relationship gets a little... Spicy
When William tells Randall "I'm staying at Jesse's tonight!", I died at the expression on Randall's face. I think Randall feels so awkward knowing his father is gay because he hasn't known his father for more than a few months and not only is he dying very quickly, but he has a very different personality than Randall expected. I hope William doesn't decide to go through with staying in a nursing home, and I really hope Randall feels like he was able to get the best out of the time with his father before he passes on.
3. Jack's Past
I never expected for the show to throw in scenes from Jack or Rebecca's childhood years, but watching the scene where Jack's father abused his mother was hard to take in. Seeing how Jack grew up and raised his children, it's incredible to me that he was able to take what he learned from his father and turn it into something so positive and loving for his own family. However, the scene where Jack takes off his wedding band and asks his father for money, totally pretending like Rebecca and his three unborn children don't exist... that was a plot twist. I totally get that he doesn't want his father involved in anything in his life, but why ask for money if you're lying about what it's for? I'm interested to see if his lies bite him in the butt later on.
4. Jack + Rebecca's Relationship Before the Big 3
This scene made me shed a few tears, not gonna lie. Not only because of how Jack felt like he wasn't able to, or shouldn't do anything, but because I think all of us have been there before, too. All of the viewers have dealt with something in our lives that have made us drop to the floor with our face in our hands, crying uncontrollably. This scene really showed us what Jack and Rebecca's lives were like before the triplets and it made for a really powerful scene.
5. Sloan or Olivia?
Okay, I think everyone who watches this show totally agrees that Sloan is 500 times better than Olivia in every way, so how in the hell can Kevin feel like he has to choose between the two? Olivia left him, the show, and made it clear that she wasn't a one man type of woman when she and Kevin were trying to have a relationship, even though Kevin was very faithful in all aspects. Sloan, on the other hand, is kind, helpful, smart, and makes Kevin a better person (and actor). So when Kevin says "You have to do what's right, just because it's right, even when it's not what you want", it broke my heart to know Sloan overheard that. I don't think Kevin meant that he doesn't want Sloan, I think he meant he didn't want to break Olivia's heart, but regardless -- I hope in the next episode he tries to mend things with Sloan, because they are so meant to be together.
I think this covers the main bases of the last episode, and I hope that the ones to come answer the obvious unanswered questions: how does Jack die? How do Rebecca and Manuel end up together? Will Toby and Kate get married? When will William die?
The This Is Us producers never leave us feeling unsatisfied, so I'm sure as season 1 (eventually) comes to a close, there will be plenty of plot twists and unexpected turns to keep up entertained.
