The four seasons are one of Michigan’s greatest perks. If you’re native to the state of Michigan, you know that summertime is anxiously awaited, and cherished when it arrives. Because we only see a few short months of summer, it’s important to take advantage of the warm weather when we can.

There are a variety of activities going on throughout the state of Michigan during the summer. Some must be planned and others can be spontaneous. A combination of personal experiences and external recommendations, below are a few suggestions of what you should spend your time doing this summer in Michigan.

1. Head up north. Michigan is home to some of the country’s most beautiful lakes. One of the favorite destinations is Torch Lake, which is known for its stunning clear water. Take the boat out or go for a swim on a warm summer day. Escape the city for a long weekend and enjoy the outdoor environment Michigan has to offer. Up north might be an hour trip or a five-hour trip – it is what you make it.

2. Visit the Upper Peninsula. Though it seems far away and disconnected, the Upper Peninsula has so much to offer. Explore nature and wildlife areas like Black River Harbor or Chapel Rock and Beach. Walk along bodies of water at the McLain State Park or Presque Isle River. Witness beautiful waterfalls like Tahquamenon, Laughing Whitefish or Jacob’s Falls. Experience Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring, Kitch-iti-kipi. Go kayaking through Pictured Rocks and get a photo of Arch Rock. The list is endless, but it starts in the Upper Peninsula.

3. Hike the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Miles of sand beach and bluffs that rise 450 feet above Lake Michigan are one of the natural beauties that make up Sleeping Bear Dunes. The Dune Climb is a 3.5-mile trip and takes around 3-4 hours depending on the weather and your condition. Hike the dunes when the sun goes down for an unhindered view of the night sky, just don’t get lost or forget a bottle of water!

4. Camp at Faster Horses. One of my personal favorites is this three-day country concert that happens every summer at Michigan International Speedway. Usually falling in the month of July, Faster Horses features many artists – new and old – who have made a name for themselves in country music. If you don’t like country music, not to worry. There are plenty of other events going on and you can’t beat the company. Just make sure you bring your tent and some towelettes…a shower is hard to come by.

5. Discover Mackinac Island. Get on the ferry and book a room for an unforgettable staycation at Mackinac Island. Covering 3.8 square miles, Mackinac Island is famous for its historic spots, dining and attractions. Spend the day riding your bike around the island, taking a carriage ride or shopping in the Victorian village. Don’t forget to try the homemade fudge before you leave!

6. Explore Detroit. Catch a glimpse of the first automobile and gain a wealth of knowledge at the Detroit Historical Museum. Listen to jazz artists play along Detroit’s Riverfront. Visit Belle Isle and take in a view of the city. Catch a Tiger’s game at Comerica Park. There’s a lot more to Detroit than meets the eye, experience it this summer.

7. Tube down a River. Grab your tube and float down one of Michigan’s lazy rivers. The Rifle River, Au Sable River and Platte River are just a few of the favorite spots to tube. It’s a fun summer activity to do with your friends or your family.

8. Shop/Eat at a Farmers Market. Communities all around Michigan are home to different farmers markets that go on throughout the year. Find a market near you and get a taste of the offerings your local farmers work so hard to produce. Eastern Market is one to experience. Not your traditional farmers market, Eastern Market is a destination in the heart of Detroit known for its fresh food, art, culture and history.

Michigan is a wonderful place to spend your summer. A variety of activities are always at your fingertips. Whether you want to stay on land or hop in the water, Michigan is one of the best states to experience it all. Prepare your list and get ready to spend a few of the most beautiful months, in the most beautiful state.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
