When it comes to eating at Michigan State, students have many options on where to choose to take advantage of their meal plan. Living at MSU for awhile, you get to know your cafeterias and know which are worthwhile. After talking to other MSU students, here is a basic rundown of all the campus' cafeterias and our feelings towards them.

The Gallery at Snyder-Phillips

Food: 4 / 5
Interior: 3.5 / 5
Overall Ranking: 4 / 5

Arguably one of the busiest cafeterias is Sny-Phi. It is definitely a challenge finding a place to sit most times during a busy period. With long community-style tables, it is not that great of a place if you want to get some homework done, but their food tends to not disappoint most. They have many food options such as pizza, burgers, international, and homestyle food stations that never really get old. Its location can't really be beat either, as it is pretty close to most locations on campus, besides south and Brody.

Heritage Commons at Landon

Food: 3.5 / 5
Interior: 4 / 5
Overall Ranking: 4 / 5

Being basically the only cafeteria for North Neighborhood, Landon always proves to be the best. The food options are limited, but quality, and if you stop for food on the off hours between lunch and dinner, they prove to be quality with their build your own quesadilla bar. Eating in Landon you will always find some odd foods you never thought would taste good, but surprisingly really does. With its beautiful old soul decor and few sub rooms, it also makes a great place to sit and quietly study when you want a change in scenery. Another great thing about Landon is they have bathrooms right in the cafeteria, a necessity for anybody who spends a lot of time eating.

The Vista at Shaw

Food: 3 / 5
Interior: 3 / 5
Overall Ranking: 3 / 5

With its mid-campus location, the cafeteria at Shaw tends to be one of the busiest cafeterias on campus; finding a spot there tends to always be a struggle. Shaw has many food options including a vegetarian and vegan station, deli, and carved meats. The best thing about Shaw would probably just be it’s location as it is very convenient more than anything.

Brody Square

Food: 3.5 / 5
Interior: 4 / 5
Overall Ranking: 3 / 5

Whether you live in the Brody neighborhood or are just coming from an event at Breslin, the Brody Cafeteria tends to be the most popular choice of the food options. From their Mexican food to their omelet bar, they have many stations that will most likely satisfy any group of people. Although they do have many stations, the options tend to never really change and do get real boring after awhile. Brody tends to be one of those MSU tourist spots that are very overrated.

Akers Dining

Food: 2 / 5
Interior: 3 / 5
Overall Ranking: 3 / 5

With a variety of food stations including an Italian, deli, stir-fry, and "smoker-style meats" station, Akers is known to not have the best quality of food. The cafeteria is also a trap as it is basically a maze trying to get to your seat. Although they do have their good days, Akers is not one of the top cafeterias that MSU has to offer.

South Pointe at Case

Food: 2 / 5
Interior: 3 / 5
Overall Ranking: 2.5 / 5

Similar to Brody, I believe that Case cafeteria is way too overrated. It gets way too busy and sometimes is difficult to find a seat, and the food options never change. You can only have so many chicken patty burgers and sandwiches before you get sick of it. They also don't even have a lot of stations and finding food you like there can be a challenge. On the other hand, being the only cafeteria open on weekends in South Neighborhood, Case does get the festive foods and holiday dinners which makes it more of a fun spot to go to. There is also lots of relaxing seating which makes it a nice place to sit and get some work done.

Holmes Dining

Food: 2.5 / 5
Interior: 2 / 5
Overall Ranking: 2 / 5

Across from Akers, way out in East campus, is Holmes dining. This cafeteria is rarely eaten at unless you live in East and tends to be always empty regardless of what time you go. Its atmosphere is nothing too special and can be proven by the fact that I could not even find a photo of it on the internet. With only three food stations, it does not have too much variety in the food they serve, but the food itself is not bad as options include options such as Mediterranean, stir-fry, and omelets.

Wilson Dining

Food: 2 / 5
Interior: 1 / 5
Overall Ranking: 2 / 5

The only good things about Wilson is that it is open for late night and has a build your own pasta bar. It really only is busy for late night and it is nothing special otherwise. It has very limited options for food- pizza, sandwiches, salads, kosher cuisine, and main serving line. There are absolutely no booths or anything fancy.

Holden Dining

Food: 1.5 / 5
Interior: 2 / 5
Overall Ranking: 1.5 / 5

Holden is another one of those cafeterias that people outside of the neighborhood do not really even know about. Holden has very limited options for food- Asian, Mexican, salad, homestyle, and dessert stations. The food itself is not really even that good, and seating isn't that special either. At least Holden has booths though and nice open windows to let natural light in. The only real thing that will make your trip to Holden worthwhile is the scoopable ice cream station which has amazing flavors, sometimes even including MSU dairy store ice cream.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."
