Regardless of which party you are a member of, I believe you should watch Michelle Obama's recent speech in New Hampshire.
The First Lady is an incredibly well-spoken and eloquent woman. When she speaks, the entire crowd listens. She has been doing it for the past eight years her husband has been in office, but I really feel that in the last year alone she has made some of the most important speeches of this election season.
Her speech at the Democratic National Convention brought many to tears. Her most recent speech was obviously political in nature, but the rhetoric she chose to use made it a human rights speech. The main point in her speech surrounded the idea that people, who do not respect women, should not be the leader and should definitely not be a role model for the United States of America.
The way that Michelle spoke was in a calm and collected manner. She did not yell or accuse, she did not blame or poke fun at Donald Trump. She stated plain and simple facts regarding the Republican candidate for presidency.
Michelle stated, “The fact is that in this election, we have a candidate for President of the United States who, over the course of his lifetime and the course of this campaign, has said things about women that are so shocking, so demeaning that I simply will not repeat anything here today.”
She made it clear that she believes that a man who can say and do such disrespectful things to women should not be elected to the most powerful political position.
"This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior, and actually bragging about kissing and groping women," said the First Lady.
What I think his supporters keep brushing under the rug is that as the most powerful leader in America, Donald Trump will be setting examples for children and teens across the nation. By electing a man with such disrespect for women, we would be saying it is okay to treat women this way. It is okay to kiss a woman without her consent, or it is okay to talk about women as a lesser group of people.
His supports are currently running a campaign with the tagline “Repeal the 19th”. Trump supporters are literally asking that a woman’s right to vote be revoked. I understand that Trump himself did not ask them to say this, but is it so hard to see where his supporters are getting the idea that women are less than men?
I have heard many people say that they do not care about what Donald Trump says, or that he isn't afraid to be politically incorrect. This reasoning has always confused me because I am pretty sure sexual assault is illegal, not politically incorrect. I get so frustrated with this excuse for his words because as a woman who has withstood creepy stares and lewd comments, I truly cannot believe that a candidate for president has this mentality. I find it incredibly insulting and disrespectful to think a man with such disrespect for women, no matter what his wealth or business savvy, could possibly be running for the president of the United States of America.
Billy Bush was the other man in the recently leaked recordings of Trump from 2005. His most recent job was to host the 9am hour of "The Today Show" on NBC. This man is obviously successful, but his job amounts to that of a television personality. This is not to belittle the job of video journalist, what I am getting at here is that a man who just laughed and agreed with Trump’s comments, is being suspended further an investigation from his job, as a TV personality.
Trump, on the other hand, the man who stated repeatedly that he kissed women without asking and grabbed them by their genitals, is still running for President. How is it that a man with the job of sharing news on TV and the man who is the Republican candidate for presidency, could have both made such disgusting comments and yet one has lost his job and one could possibly be the next President of the United States?
The President of the United States is not only in charge of the country and in charge of making it as successful as can be, but he or she is a role model for the rest of the country and the world. The President is a representation of America as a whole, and I for one think Donald Trump is an incredibly skewed and embarrassing representation of today’s Americans. His values share little to no resemblance with what I believe to be the common standards of my fellow citizens.
This past week, when she spoke to the state of New Hampshire about "the other candidate", she did not once, in her 26+ minute speech say Donald Trump's name and this choice was amazing. By not saying his name, she took away his power. He was not even worth naming due to his most recent and his past comments about women.
Michelle ended her speech by commending Hillary Clinton and listing all of her extensive qualifications to be president. She discussed how everyone needs to vote, and how though people may think their vote is too small to count, that in fact, everyone’s vote has an impact.
Michelle’s speech was regarding only one of the many reasons Donald Trump is not fit to be president. His failures far outweigh his successes, whatever his “successes” may be. At the end of the day, I would hate to wake up on November 9th knowing that the man elected president has more in common with the creepy men who comment on my body as I walk down the street or the men who honk and yell when I go running than with the educated and respectful man who held the office before him. I think it is not only time to recognize who is most unfit to be president but to recognize who actually is. And that she will do a damn good job as president.
