With less than a month until the Olympics in Rio, the event itself has already taken controlled a good portion of the news. Between the Olympic trials taking place and Zika in Brazil, the Olympics this year are going to be an interesting games. But if there's one thing about the Olympics there is to be excited about it'll be watching Michael Phelps in swimming.
Phelps' recently became the first male swimmer to compete in 5 olympic games. While celebrating his 31st birthday, Phelps secured his spot on the U.S. team. Phelps has been swimming at the Olympic level since the age of 15 when he swam in the 2000 Olympic games. Although he did not medal, he made it to the finals in the 200-meter butterfly.
Since then Phelps has gone on to compete in the Athens, Beijing, and London games. During these games, he became the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals in three games, 18 of which are gold. Additionally, Phelps finished the 2012 Olympics as the most successful swimmer of the meet for the third Olympics in a row. He also has set 39 world records, more records than any other swimmer. Phelps currently holds seven world records, not including his records for most Olympic medals and most Olympic gold medals ever won by one person.
When Phelps announced his retirement from swimming not many people he was finished just quite yet. And they were right because, in April 2014, Phelps announced that he would be coming out of retirement. In December 2015, at the Winter Nationals, Phelps won titles in the 200-meter individual medley, and the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly, bringing his total career national titles to 62.
So what can we expect of the most decorated Olympian of all time and brand new father? It's a tough call, but hopefully Phelps will come out on top once again and bring home some more golds to add to his collection before he officially and finally retires.
