Mexican Holiday Food

The holidays are here and I am ready to gain pounds in order to eat all of these.

The holidays are coming, and that means something very special to all Hispanics out there. It is a time where merriment and family are abundant. It is a time for religious affairs like posadas and watching way too many Baby Jesus movies (yes we do, whether we want to or not). It is a time celebrating the best three months of the year. More than anything, though, it is a time for food!

We all gain a couple (10+) pounds during this time but it is completely worth it. We can only get these foods this time of year so you go all out. Here is a list, in no particular order, of God's gifts to us during this holiday season.

Buñuelos

Buñuelos are basically a dessert tortilla. They are sweet and crispy and pretty much what all dreams are made of.

Atole

To offset the sweetness of the buñuelos, you drink atole. It's bland by itself but makes the perfect pair with buñuelos.

Rosca de Reyes

This is a bread made in the shape of an oval and there is multiple plastic baby Jesus (plural) in there. If you end up getting a baby, you and your family are will have to host a party on February 2 and provide tamales (explained below). While eating the bread is great, if you get the baby, it is preferable to swallow the baby rather than having your mom hate you for a whole month.

Ponche

I have reasons to believe that this is what the God's preferred drink was. It has guavas, sugar cane, apples, tamarind, raisins, peaches, and basically everything your heart desires.

Champurrado

Champurrado is basically atole, however, it is sweetened with chocolate. It's about 150x better than regular hot chocolate and a staple to every Hispanic's holiday party, breakfast, lunch, and dinner (yes it's that good).

Pozole

There are people who swear this will cure a hangover. As for me, I love meal on a cold morning. I advise everyone to try it first and then look up what its made of. Trust me, it's good,

Pan de Muertos

You can only find this bread around Day of the Dead, so the first week of November. It is an offering bread, but it is my favorite bread to eat. You can find this in any Hispanic bakery and you should try it asap.

...And last but not least...

Tamales

These need no explanation. They can be sweet and spicy, but always delicious.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
