How could anything possibly be wrong with the #metoo movement? It's an amazing movement that has given women a voice and encouragement to call out and confront their abusers—a chance to give women opportunities to seek justice.
It also shocked me to hear that in some countries women are wishing this movement hadn't happened. My mom was telling me that Korean women are struggling in society because of the #metoo movement and when I heard the reasons I was in awe. But then I began to think that if even such a developed and modernized country could somehow still blame women through this movement; there's no doubt it has to be happening in many other countries.
Now don't get me wrong, Korea is a wonderful and efficient country—almost more developed in transportation and technology compared to America, but it still lacks many liberal traits. The country itself acknowledges the movement, which means that they are willing to listen to the women who want to speak up. The problem lies in the prevention aspect. In the US and other modern nations, we are preventing (or at least trying) by teaching and punishing the men that have assaulted women. We are teaching what counts as assault, no means no, and how to act in public situations.
However, in conservative counties like Korea, instead of taking action and teaching the men, they are preventing any environments that could create or provide a situation in which an assault could happen. Many major companies have begun to stop hiring women in general. Whether they are fully qualified or even more qualified compared to a male counterpart, they are not getting hired at all.
Men are also starting to avoid women in general. It's starting young, as even college students are warning other male college students to avoid staying alone with a woman because that could create a situation. A movement that was supposed to help women is actually putting women in a bigger crisis than before, all because of how a society thinks and works.
Sadly, because of this women are wishing that this movement had not happened at all. In this culture, women are willing to keep secrets and hide the injustices they faced if it means protecting their careers and futures.
Although we are still working on the movement, we need to realize that the movement is being misinterpreted in other countries and need to work harder to improve the lives of women being assaulted.
