Met Gala 2016: A night of glowing dresses, blue contacts, metallic dresses, but also a night of phenomenal music performances and not so comfortable dancing.
As one of the biggest nights in fashion the Met Gala is a costume-themed party that celebrates a theme of fashion that, not only inspires designers in their creations, but also individuals in their wardrobes. This year the theme was/is: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” and it spoke to a world of embroidery, thermo shaping, LED lighting, and so on.
Going out with a bang, Claire Danes stole the red carpet in a glow-in-the-dark gown created by Zac Posen that shone a whimsical sky-blue and brought the image of Cinderella to life. Alongside Danes, working the theme of technology, was Taylor Swift taking on a “Jenny Humphrey” look in Louis Vuitton and wearing a punk rock dress with tall black boots. Couple Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik also played with the theme wearing metallic plates and robotic arms in Tommy Hilfiger (Hadid) and Versace (Malik).
But while everyone does come for the fashion, what is a gala without any music? This year's musical guest was singer Abel Tesfaye, or as many know him, The Weeknd.
Arriving with 19-year-old girlfriend Bella Hadid – both wearing all black Givenchy The Weeknd stole the night performing a mash up of his recent songs while bringing in rapper and friend, Nas, in singing “Tell Your Friends.” While the performance was not streamed through any networks fans were able to see the magic in the Met through snapchat that was used by a number of people on the inside.
Among a crowd of awkwardly dancing (in tight dresses and high heels) ladies and stiffly sitting men Abel light up the room. Exploding with energy and shooting it into the crowd viewers saw a new side of Taylor Swift dancing, with partner, and watched as others crazed over The Weeknd’s performance.
Musical performances at the Met Gala have always been incredibly important in its production but this year it was a big part of the night giving stars the chance to actually produce “mini music videos” to a number of songs – that are no being posted to Instagram. Many stars have participated in the music videos all showing their own personalities by dancing in different ways. Madonna, for instance, took advantage of the mini video to show off some moves as well as her Givenchy outfit that, while many think is “too revealing,” she claims is a “political statement.”
“We have fought an continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world,” wrote Madonna on Instagram. “When it comes to women’s rights we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement. The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is prof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I’m not going to start.”
But other than Madonna, many stars too their mini videos to show off their exotic outfits, luxurious accessories, and shimmering makeup – unless you’re Willow and Jaden Smith, they rocked in their Chanel and Louis Vuitton, dancing their way around the light rays.
From the fashion to the music the Met Gala was yet again, another success. Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, was not only a successful theme that speaks to this generation’s style but also was a theme that brought out a world of style, speech, and smile.
