If there's one thing we Americans love to watch it's sports. There's a saying that Baseball is "America's favorite pass time" and while this sport does have a lot of popularity in this country, I would say it's more of American Football. I call it American Football, because I don't want to confuse it with Football, which is what people of foreign countries would call Soccer. Watching sports on television, can bring a group of friends and family together. It's a way for people to bond and start a conversation, even if there are rival teams between people.
Through the eyes of women, it's clear that the sports' field is still mostly male dominated. Whether it's the people that report the games, manage the teams, play on the teams, or own the teams. Not a lot of gender diversity. However, that field will slowly change, as long as we continue to keep women who like sports, interested in them and encourage them to pursue a career in any of the professions within the sports' field.
I personally did not start getting interested in sports until the 4th/5th grade. The first sport I really paid attention to was soccer, because that was a popular sport of my parents' native country. My parents are Nigerian by the way. Many of my family members would watch Nigeria's and America's national team play in tournaments and were also fans of some teams in the English Premiere League (that's the UK's professional soccer league).
So, I wanted to learn how to play soccer, but then I started watching basketball. I begged my parents instead to enroll me in a recreational basketball league, so I could learn the skills of the sport. Long story short, I played two years on my high school basketball team and that was something that I will cherish forever.
If you're a young woman like me that loves watching and playing sports (I watch a lot of different kinds of sports and have 3 favorite teams), here are 5 things that ya'll can relate to as a girl who loves sports:
1. Games/Matches get you hype-
When you're watching a game/match, especially if it's a good one, you can never sit still. People might stare at you in shock when they see your enthusiasm or frustration [depending on which team you support].
2. Arguing with other people on stats-
Some people, mainly guys, can get so into a game/match...they start arguing on stats of the players, coaches and the teams. It can be intimidating watching people go back and forth about how a season will go for a team or player or how certain teams/players are ranked against each other. But if you're a woman who pays attention to the stats and follows key sports' news events---you're not that intimidated. You can hold your own in a debate among sports' talk.
3. Possible experience playing a sport-
I played on a recreational basketball team from 7th-8th grade and then was on my high school basketball team for 2 years. Granted I wasn't that good of a player, but I did learn skills on how to play the sport and experience on how the sport should be played. If your a woman that has played a sport before, your understanding of the game comes in handy, when you're analyzing a game with someone.
4. Trash talk-
Trash talk can be pretty funny. It's fun sometimes to rub it in someone's face, when your team or player is doing better than your rival. If you have the passion and stats to back it up...even better. I do that a lot with the UConn Huskies (I love all my school's sports' teams!)
5. A possible career-
As a journalism major, I could have a career reporting on any topic(s) that I choose. Though I like to watch and play sports, I don't see myself becoming a sports' reporter in the future. However, if you're a woman that loves sports and does see yourself becoming involved in the sports' field one-way-or-another, I say go for it! You have the passion and the knowledge and with more experience you can reach that career goal.
