When considering who to vote for, I think of my friends, knowing many of them lay on opposite ends of the spectrum. I think of the Donald Trump supporters I see all over Twitter and Facebook and then I think of Donald Trump himself.
As a current student at Mr. Trump's alma mater, I do not understand how someone so vile could have been a product of this institution. Neither do I understand how he could be so popular with the American public. I do understand that many, myself included, believe there are multiple things wrong with the way our current government operates, but Donald Trump is not the answer.
The President is barely the issue; the issue is inside of Congress. If you want a change in the government, go out and vote in local elections and senatorial elections. Not only will Donald Trump get nothing done, due to both parties in Congress despising him, but he will most likely destroy every diplomatic relation we have. You may not think that the way Donald Trump speaks is that bad because he's telling the truth but, as bad as it sounds, politics is not always about truthfulness.
We do not need a crude individual as the leader of this country especially when half the world already despises us because we are so excessively arrogant. Yes, he may appeal to people for economic reasons, since he is a billionaire and all, but he doesn't have much control over that either. According to my limited knowledge of AP US Government, the President is mostly responsible for foreign affairs, not domestic affairs. Most of the time, he doesn't even need to sign a law in order for it to pass. The way Trump talks about other countries has the potential to be hostile, which is dangerous in this day and age where many countries can press a button and wipe the Earth of all life.
Not to mention the way Trump speaks about illegal immigrants and his generalizations towards the Hispanic community and cities that are heavily minority populated is unacceptable. Some Trump supporters just think that the people that claim his rhetoric is dangerous are just being "PC" and "sensitive," but that's not the case. This is bigger than our sensitivity. Trump's presence in this election has brought out the KKK, which is slowly rising again, and many of the closet racists that have been silently brewing during Obama's 8-year term.
You think racism is over because you don't hear white people calling black people the "n-word" in public anymore, we can share public facilities and go to the same schools, but there is so much more to racism than segregation. Negative stereotypes and increasing prejudice contribute to the still existing racism in this country. Trump calling Mexicans rapists and then going on national television during the last debate and saying, "We have some bad hombres here," is unacceptable. His unnecessary change to a Spanish word is a blatant attempt to again single out the Hispanic population-- a population known for its work ethic and resilience. It's not about our sensitivity to his singling out a particular population, it's about what these words make his silently racist followers think is okay.
Trump as president would be chaos for minority populations. It has the potential to reverse the last 40 years of American History as far as social justice is concerned, and that is a thought I find very scary.
As for Hillary, she is shady and she is fake. She would not have been my number one choice to lead this country, for many reasons, none that include her husband. But Hillary has the potential and the influence to do good things for this country. She has the experience with diplomacy and the connections inside of Congress to get things done. Many of you think her "treason" is unforgivable, but the FBI forgave her for it. People make mistakes and I know this particular mistake is incredibly unacceptable but we are still okay. The world went on after those emails were deleted. You should move on with it. Move past your rage and realize that what's important in this election is not who we may like the most, but who will get the most done.
And that, for sure, is definitely not Trump.
