As I was driving to my second summer internship, I couldn't help myself from reminiscing on how far I've come. It took a lot of encouragement and advice to get me where I am today. Pastors, family, community leaders, mentors, and my church family have contributed to my achievements. But it's not about me. It's about me helping you. What are my achievements if I'm not helping others do the same? So I'm here to share that wisdom.
Know your path. Know your worth. Gosh! This was the hardest lesson I had to learn. Life can be disheartening when you know where you want to be but, you're just not there yet. You're anxiously waiting for that moment. Meanwhile, you hop on Instagram and see your colleagues "doing it big" or "making moves". Don't let that discourage you from your goals. Think of it like this: every individual has a path. What seems great from someone else may not be the perfect timing for you. There is a time and place for everything. I used to look at my colleagues and feel demoralized because I thought my accomplishments were minute compared to theirs. But comparing yourself to others ends now. Don't lose yourself trying to keep up with others. Be patient and persistent, your time is coming.
Write it down! I always carry about two journals in my purse. That's just the journalist in me but, there's something about putting your dreams on paper. Writing out your goals is like writing the Deceleration of Independence or the Constitution for yourself. You're declaring what you want to happen in your life by writing it down. After being inspired by an episode of being Mary Jane, last school year I posted several goals and advice above my desk. I read them aloud everyday declaring that I was beautiful, confident, and that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. After a while, I began to see those things everyday and in my future. So, even if you don't have a journal, grab a post it and get to writing!
Throw away your plan B, stick to plan A. It's imperative to strictly focus on one goal at a time. It can be a little difficult especially if you have many goals you want to accomplish. I've learned to write out my goals in order and accomplish them one by one. If you have a specific goal and you know exactly how to get there what's the point of a plan B? A plan B could be a setback if you don't play your cards right. So why not just conquer plan A and toss plan B out the window. Focus on that. Believe that. Achieve that.
Don't be shy. Networking is fun! When I step into a new environment whether it be a class or a job I am nervous wreck. Although I hide it pretty well, it can be frightening meeting new people, especially professionals in my field of study. But don't let being nervous stop you from meeting your next opportunity. College, offers many outlets for students to network. Believe it or not, most professionals want to meet you. They want to be that helping hand that you need for you to be successful. While I was interning at the News and Observer,a newspaper in North Carolina, it took me a week to get that confidence to go up to another reporter's desk to ask for advice. At first I thought they would be annoyed with helping me but, they actually enjoyed it. Put away your fears and just go for it. You never know who you might meet and how they may help you on your journey of success.
Eliminate all non-factors. Remember that path I was talking about? Well, there comes a time in your life when you realize that you can't take everyone with you on your path. Unfortunately, everyone can't grow with you and that can potentially be a hindrance to your success. It won't be easy letting go but it will be beneficial. Your circle is a reflection of you. Examine your circle and ask yourself if that's how you would want to be represented. Are they heading in the same direction as you? Don't let weeds grow around your vine. It'll eventually suffocate and die and your future is more important than that.
Keep these tips in mind on your journey. Being willing to listen to those who are giving you sound judgement is the best thing you could ever do in your life. Acting like you know it all and you don't need any help will eventually be the culprit of your downfall. Have an open mind to learn and take every opportunity by the horns!
