A Message To All High School Graduates

This is the beginning of a new chapter.

A Message To All High School Graduates

I would wake up, take a shower, get dressed and go to school. For seven hours or so I would learn about new thoughts and ideas and then go straight back home to start the cycle over. Depending on the day, I would receive plenty of homework to do in order to confirm that I thoroughly learned everything I needed to know and that I have retained all the information given to me. I did the homework to the best of my ability, and then I would go to bed. As the cycle of the life of a teenager in high school repeats itself over and over again, a rut is formed. But once you become a graduating senior in high school, the routine may change. Now, your grades are set in stone until college, and you become more lazy and relaxed. You have already learned so much and you think you are ready to take on the outside community. So why should you do the extra work my future college requires of you over the summer?

If high school is supposed to get you ready for college, what is college supposed to prepare you for? Some say college prepares you for your future occupations that will help you become financially stable. Others say it helps you become ready to take on the world to become a “global citizen." Whatever the case may be, colleges nowadays offer students opportunities to grow into more mature adults when it comes to the outside world. There are so many clubs and activities that coincide with the work in college and it would be incorrect to say that most colleges don’t have these opportunities. Almost every college has some special program or club that enables a student to become more important to the world (at least in their eyes). However, more and more people are saying that colleges don’t do enough to prepare students for their role as “global citizens." As stated before, most modern-day colleges have a lot of programs and clubs to offer for this. In fact, a lot of colleges make this very clear on their websites or admissions information. It seems that all the resources are there but students aren’t taking advantage of them.

Without making an attempt to sound negative, students and young adults are becoming less and less disciplined. This is not to say that all students and young adults are not disciplined, but it is becoming more evident. It is important for every student to learn that colleges have a plethora of choices with regards to planning their future. More discipline is required in everyone, for discipline toward education is the first step to becoming a well-rounded person. Colleges and their future students should continue to keep doing what they’re doing, for there is enough there for students to become well prepared.

At the end of the day, you still end up doing some sort of homework. Discipline is a hard skill to grasp, especially when you are a student. Going to college is no easy task, but I think most of you have all the potential you need to succeed.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
