Mental Illness In Christianity

The stigma

Sometimes the idea that people are different is an idea that escapes us especially in the Christian community. We see the idea of mental illness flowing everywhere and as Christians we should be able to love and help those in need, yet we just shove them away as though it is impossible to love the Lord and be sad or anxious. We act as though it is a taboo and awful thing and we become judgmental to something that is mainly a chemical imbalance in the first place. One thing we miss out on helping the most is mental illness.

It comes from a state of mind that is mainly embedded through the other things we ignore such as memories and broken hope. We as Christians shove it away as though it is a worse sin than most other things when truly all sin is equal in Gods eyes. They do not see it as something we cannot control, but something we choose to be a part of something we use just hurt because we can and choose to. Many people assume we choose to be miserable and that is not the truth.

Mental illness is chemicals imbalanced it is something that you have to work on. God makes us with faults and he knows we are going to sin, but he expects us to build in it and not hide from it. God loves us no matter what we are facing and holds us through the trials and the pain. We miss out on the opportunity every day to help them because we are so quick to judge and make assumptions.

In Christianity mental illness is such a different idea the world already hates the idea of not being able to see our sickness. We know that the world takes it to lightly. They think that there is no validity I mean maybe partial validity if three doctors agree. That is before we throw holier than thou Christians into the mix. Lucky for some of us we do find the people in the Christian mix who get that we are not all perfect

I didn’t write this to make any point other than put the opinions down. Get your head out of the judgment pool and help someone. God didn’t make you to be self-righteous but to be helpful. God made us to be together and to love one another not to be alone. Love one another and help the ones you miss right next to you. I know from experience that having a good Christian friend is all it took for me to look for help and you could be the first to help someone too.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
